Savage 22 Hi-Power

What is this caliber. How does it compare to other modern calibers. And can you still buy ammo or is it a reload as you go?

    It was first sold in the US prior to the First World War ( 1912 ). Was the first high velocity 22 center fire available ( 2700 fps ).
    To many dummies tried to use it as a big game cartridge. It's not loaded in the US any more, you can still buy European factory ammo for $10.00 a box.

    Rufe has the numbers. I just had to have one and after a few years found a savage 99 in .22 HiPower. Then came ammo. You still can get dies and Sellier & Bellot still loads new ammo under the 5.6 x 52R, as it seems to remain a popular round in Europe. It is a rimmed case and tapered. Look around at gun shows and here on GB. Don't wait to buy it as it usually gets snatched up immediately, but do the usual price shopping thing, as some will tell you it isn't made anymore(not in USA). Anywhere around the $10/20 should be fair.

    It also takes a larger bullet than the standard .223 if you reload. Bullets are getting harder to find in the .228 cal.

    My brother had a Take-down 99 in 22Hi-Power last year. Re-blued it and threw on a new butt stock, drilled+tapped for an old-school Weaver K4 and she shot like a dream. Hornady can supply .228 dia bullets for loading and Norma also still loads ammo in 5.6x52R. Keep your eyes open and local gun shows for a set of dies; $20 or less. This caliber is a lot of fun to shoot and makes for an awesome deer rifle as well.
