Whatever you have, I am certain that it is NOT a .54 caliber artillery shell.
If what you have really IS an artillery shell, it is worth either 1) a quick trip into a body bag, or 2) several years in a federal prison for possession of a destructive device. Call the police, tell them what you found, & let them remove & destroy it.

The 54's are Naval weapons. What type of projectile do you have? If you don't know, very carefully remove the fuze by turning counterclockwise. Better yet, find a Navy Gunnersmate (old GMG).

If you think it might be live then please follow nmyers advice and either find someone QUALIFIED to disarm it, or call the authorities and have it disposed of. It's not worth blowing up yourself and possibly your faily. Depending on its' age it could be very unstable so be careful with it.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to disarm a shell. Only the MK33 long delay aerial bomb fuze has an anti-withdrawal device. Without going into a lecture on fuzes, just remember that a number of things have to happen to arm a fuze. All arty fuzes carry a setback safety. Very hard to arm manually. The only time most folks have any contact with items like this is at the movies. Once in awhile, folks bring in live ordnance without even knowing it. Fortunatly, my background is ordnance.
A gunnersmate installs the fuzes, a gunnersmate removes them if not fired.
You can check if it's live by removing the fuze (most dangerous part) if not, no sweat.
If it is live, call the cops and watch a circus really start.

General Info:
The 54-calibre Mk-45 is a US lightweight naval gun based on the older Mk-42, produced since 1971, that provides surface combatants accurate naval gunfire against fast, highly maneuverable surface targets, air threats and shore targets during amphibious operations. The Mk-45 has a range of 13 nautical miles and a rate of fire of between 16 and 20 rounds per minute automatic, firing a 5 inch calibre round from a 475 to 500 round magazine.

While you may well be able to disarm the shell safely . . . although I certainly do not advocate this . . . posession of it is good for a nice long vacation at the Graybar Hotel. Call the EOD people in your area and have it picked up. With luck, you won't be charged. Keep it around, offer it for sale, ask questions on the Internet and expect the Gestapo to come calling. That's government property and, further, illegal for you to have unless registered under the NFA.

Years back, when I was still doing shows, I ran into a guy who collected "INERT" ordinance.
There is a number of collectors out there, interested in this sort of thing. First and foremost you have to ascertain that the projectile is "INERT",i.e. it doesn't contain explosives and/or a live fuse.
These guys wouldn't get within a mile of you if they knew you have "hot stuff". Since they collect this kind of ordinance, their quite familiar with the danger a live round poses and the legal ramifications that would ensue, if they got caught with it.
Lastly, the proper terminology for your "artillery shell" is ( 5 inch, 54 Caliber ). This is the largest standard Naval Projectile in use by the modern U S Navy. The "5 Inch" is the nominal diameter of the projectile. The "54 Caliber" refers to the normal length of the gun barrels its fired from.

This one is probably a drill round, but you never know. I had a fellow bring in a live WWII 20mm HE round once. Another time, a fellow brought in a live pineapple grenade. A few bigger pieces too.
Don't ever mess with dug up Civil War ordnance though. That stuff IS dangerous!
