Ruger O/U

I looking for some gunsmithing advice.....

I can get an older Ruger Rd Label 12 Ga. O/U. It does not have choke tubes, and is choked Full/Modified. I think I can get it for $400.00.

I do a fair amount of duck hunting, and I'd like to have it re-choked to Modified/Improved Cyl. Possibly have it changed to accept choke tubes, but that may be out of my price range.

What can I expect to pay for these services? Or, based on the gun, should I stay away for this whole idea?

    Opening the chokes isn't much of a problem. Choke tubes are. $400.00 for a decent Red Label is a steal!

    I'd pattern the gun before I made any changes. I have a suspicion that it might just be fine as is.

    IF YOU DON'T TAKE THE GUN PLEASE LET ME KNOW. $400.00 IS A BARGIN. TUBES WOULD BE ABOUT $150.00 OR SO.

    I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.

    Why would you wanna open up a mod- full barrel for duck hunting? Try it first you will be surprised on the results.

    I'm just thinking that Steel Shot patterns so much tighter, I'd like to open it up one notch.

    Plus, I'm not exactly sure how old the gun is - will Full Choke be safe long-term for the barrel?

    I think a big concern is that the steel shot may not be the best thing to use after openning up the tubes. It will likely have no adverse effect as allmost all modern waterfowl guns are designed specifically to handle it, but think about heavy shot or some other such product. Use of Hevi-Shot or Bismuth will likely pattern nicely too, and I think you should think twice about changing the squeeze on those tubes! I doubt the steel will pattern so differently that you will want to do it...good advice given before; check out the pattern first and then decide if you really need to do it or not. If the Red Label is in nice shape, I would jump on it for $400 too!

    I'd be more than happy to take it off your hands for that price, even give you a little something for your trouble. Also, I'd have to agree that steel through reworked barrels would not be the best idea. Talking to Ruger and Briley directly would be my best advice, though. If you aren't sure, about spending the money, though, drop me a line--I need a new trap gun, and soon would be good.

    Don't know about the ruger but had an older citori that I had bored out to mod/full. Shot steel through it for 12 years without a problem. Used it for both upland and waterfowl. absoulutly hammered upland game with it(lead) but struggled with waterfowl(steel).Even the mod choke seemed too tight to pattern decent at steel shot range. Was about to open one barrel to improved for a setup like your considering before I found a red label with tubes.I have yet to shoot a gun that patterned steel well from a full tube.

    that gun has a lifetine warrenty. modify it? warrenty gone. pardon me if i sound like a father but buying a 400 dollar gun and dumping money into it like that reminds me of a kid buying a broken VW and spending his summer vacation in the garage trying to make it into a porsche. if hiting the duck is only worth 400.00, do it. if you want to hit every duck without wondering if the gun is going to blow up, spend the money and get a new gun with what you want and blast away. i mean seriously, the dollar to pound of meat on a duck makes duck hunting one of most expensive meals in the world. if you are trying to save a hundred bucks here or there on a gun, yet having to spend thousands in support equipment to get to the blind, i wouldnt be banking the whole ball of wax on a 400.00 gun. hope this helps.
