Carry loads
My question is there is a large selection of carry loads for all the calibers but my main concern is in a situacion where you have to use your weapon wich ammo is the one will bring less trouble in case that you have to go to court to prove self defense in my case I usually carry 45acp and some times 9mm, in both cases there is +p ammo and somo police deps use this load but for a civilian what? [?]

I, from a legal standpoint, always reccommend you simply stick with a main market manufacturer, and avoid using either handloaded ammo or home modified major manufacturer ammo. One of the problems with a blanket statement here is that some states and municipalities DO have restrictions on the kind of ammo you can use; these are ussually the self same cities that disallow possession of a firearm, even for self defense within their borders. Therefore, the point is rather mooted as you cannot have a pistol anyway (see the articles pertaining to the recent case in Wilmette Il. for example; the guy is out of trouble now but not without some serious effort!) I would stick to Cor-Bon, Federal Hydro-Shocks or something of that nature as they have an established reputation as being effective and you can truthfully say you bought them, over the counter with no special effort at your local large Sporting Goods chain store!

I carry with two 8-round magazines of Hydrashock in my .45. I haven't had to test it yet and hopefully never will, but others have already done the testing and I'm confident in the load.
Never, ever, ever use anything but major factory, quality ammunition for defense, especially in an automatic pistol. In a double-action revolver, if there's a dud, you can just pull the trigger again, but in an automatic you get to rack the slide, which isn't how I'd want to enter a gun fight. Experiment and find the most reliable factory ammo in your gun and carry with that loaded.
One bad primer, one forgotten powder charge, one mistake in reloading could cost you your life when the fecal matter hits the rotary oscillator. Don't take that risk, and remember: no matter how hard it hits, how deadly it is, or how many you can put into a pie plate at whatever range, it's better if the lead at least flies the right general direction every time you pull the trigger than if it doesn't.0 -
I have seen what Hydro Shocks can do in the real world, and that is what I carry in my 40 cal Sigma.

I load jacketed hollow points in both of my carry guns. That is the same round the local sheriff department uses.[:I]

In articles I have read they say never never use hand loads. The DA will convince the jury that you are soooooo mean and nasty you had to make your own killer bullets. Glaser Safy Slugs are a good bet. They are designed not to do colateral damage and there marketing is such it sounds like a more kind and saf round. My 2 cents [8D]

Wow I don't know what any of those ammo definitions mean, would anyone mind explaining the difference between regular ammo and hollow tips, hand loads, and hydroshock?

This is an interesting topic. I think Zerodin's technical explanation of why not to use reloads makes the most sense. But I've also heard the "legal" explanation too. Apparently you are considered to be a "gun nut" if you use reloaded ammo for self-defense. To me that just shows the layperson's ignorance of firearms, which will be the undoing of us all. It won't be the Million Mom March that will take our guns away, it will be the complacency of the average citizen who has become so far removed from the practical use of a firearm and has been scared into gun-abolishment by the liberal media.
Anyway, Pip, here are some definitions for you:
regular ammo = usually a round ball bullet, often copper or metal jacketed
hollow tips (aka hollow point) = has a hole in the end of the bullet so it will expand when it hits the target, thus tearing more bone and flesh and causing a whole lot of damage
hand loads = ammunition reloaded by an individual (not manufactured by a company), people buy their own gun powder, primer, bullets, and reuse brass casings and make their own cartridges
Hydra-Shok = a brand name of ammunition that is made by Federal, basically a hollow point with a metal post in the bullet for that extra bit of knockdown (Ouch!)

Wounded Wolf. I tend to agree with you that it is a sad state of affairs that has come to be when you are considered a monster for taking approporiate measures to defend yourself. Sad also is the fact that the legal beagles will take you apart in court for trying to load your own personnal defense ammo! Just another crap manifestation of the liberal establishment and their "feel good" legislation. At the rate we are going slingshots will be off the list some day too! I feel it neccessary though to point out the current trend in courts around the U.S. to keep our good friends as far out of trouble as I can. No real way around it I'm afraid. Until reason prevails though, Cor-Bon, Federal et al are a good adjunct.
