Early AR-15 period of manufacture

Does anybody know where I can look to see when an early Colt AR-15 Model SP1 may have been made. The serial number is SP1777X and the information on the side reads as follows: Colt Patent Firearms Mfg. Co. instead of Colt's Firearms Division (1980's) or the newest, Colt Mfg. Co. I have seen this early manufacture description on 1960's vintage Vietnam Era M-16 and M-16A1 rifles. Please email me with any information as to where I can look.
