while it appears that you have a parts / mechanical problem that needs to be addressed, even when in perfect working order the MARLIN 81 series of bolt action, tube fed rifles are difficult to single load.

i own a MARLIN MODEL 81DL, and i believe MARK CHRISTIAN also owns one. i have found that attempting to single load this rifle (ie circumventing the tube mag) is a pain in the neck. the actuated carrier mechanism that feeds a loaded round from the under the BBL tube magazine is positioned in such a way that when you open the bolt and attempt to insert a single round it can interfere with you accsess to the chamber. it is possible to partialy insert a round in the chamber (it will be positioned on a sharp angle) and manipulate the bolt to close, but its not a sure thing.

i have found that its easy to jar loose the round, or to get a shell stuck in the chamber at an angle. if you attempt to force a shell in this position you can damage it, or cause a tricky stoppage.

there are several publications that show exploded view parts digrams. JACK FIRST has one, and there is a GUIDE TO ASSEMBLY AND DISSASEMBLY:RIMFIRE RIFLES that may be helpful.

if you are unsure about how it all goes together, or if you have damaged or missing parts, you best bet is to take it to a liscensed or experianced gunsmith to be safe.

these are nice guns, and highly accuratte. good luck. best regards, mike.
