ported barrels

Is there any problem in shooting a ported barrel in a semiauti w/o a ported slide?

    i have a sig 226. does a ported barrel really help with accuracy? my controle is ok at 25 yards, but i would like it to be better.

    Hi,
    Just wanted to put in my 2 cents. Ported barrels have proven to reduce felt recoil allowing for quicker targeting for second shots. But then again the flash can be distracting in dark lighting. Then the extra noise that comes with ported barrels, can be a bit much. I feel that if the recoil is so great that a ported barrel is needed then maybe the shooter should think about a smaller caliber.

    It will help some. But it will not change the accuracy of the gun. All the porting will do is what ginmaster said. The gun will be louder but there will be a recoil reduction between 15% and 50%. It all depends of the amount of porting that is done.

    You neglected to say what your 226 is chambered for. The 357 or 40 chamberings can be a little "flippy", but a male of average or above height/weight and hand size should be able to control them. If your a female, small of stature and hand your work may be cut out for you even if your pistol is in 9mm.

    Grip is a major factor. If you do not have good physical control (firm and as close to the bore line as safely possible) you will have problem. Also there is the style of hold/grip that you use which carries over into your stance. All of which needs an experienced shooter or instructor working directly with you at the firing line.

    Ponder the above, and keep at your practice routine. Also you may be able to improve control by changing or making some modifications to your pistols grip.

    Consider porting as a "last resort" ... it is costly (after-market) and as mentioned above you have the flash and noise to contend with.

    the sig 226 is a 9mm. i'm a full size male with a good grip and stance. i do speed shooting/rapid-fire. i just wonder if the ported barrels would help when i'm plinking fast.

    With what you are shooting; porting will speed you up some. The report will seem louder because it is coming back at you. Also you will be getting back on your targets faster because of the reduced muzzel jump and felt recoil.

    thanks ryan, that is the answer i was hoping for. the shot being louder is not a problem, reduced muzzle jump and recoil is what i ment by control/accuracy.

    Anytime. I ported most of my shotguns for the same reasons. It does help me get doubles quicker with my 12, 16, and 20 gauges. If you have it done it should help you get to your next shot quicker.
