Winchester 30-30?
Please help to identify this gun from my fathers estate.It is a lever action rifle,cal 30-30 center fire.On the bottom of the gun in front of the lever action is a 6 digit number of 389587. This is the only marks on the gun.It has a saddle ring.This is a gun to be kept in the family and would just like to know more about it. Thank you

Hard to believe theres not some other marks on it lel. Look it over real close.How do you know its 30-30?

Bob--Thanks for the reply.After lookimg it over with a mag. glass all I can find below the back sight is -Barrel 3o cal- We found the gun in a case with 30-30 bullets with it.I do not know if it is a Winchester.This gun belonged to our grandfather,he was inspector for the goverment.In the same case was his colt 1909 army pistol,I was told he used both guns for his job. Well, you got me stumped. Any factory produced firearm should be marked very clearly. It would require a great deal of grinding to remove all traces.Since you used the term saddlering, I assume you have some resource available to you.And since you said Winchester I'm assuming you described the overall appearance and it is a repeater. Short of posting a picture, your best best bet would be to stop by a gunshop, or shooting range for an initial identification.

Seriously now, if your Saddle Ring Carbine (SRC) is a Winchester, it will have the following stamped deeply into the upper tnag right behind the hammer;
MODEL 1894
- W I N C H E S T E R-
TRADEMARK
The barrel will be stamped/marked;
MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.
NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21. 1894.
The caliber stamp that is located on the barrel just forward of the frame ring will read 30 W.C.F.
The final marking you should see is located on the left side of the barrel approx. one inch forward of the frame ring;
NICKEL STEEL BARREL
ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER
(the dashes are actually a solid line, but I can not type that)
If you can not locate all of these stamped marks in the barrel and on the upper tang, you probably do not have a real Winchester Model 1894 SRC (or you have one that has been buffed/polished to death before it was refinished).

lel did'nt say it was a Winchester....He asked if it were by chance...a Winchester 30-30...?

Hello Capt... true, but with the given serial number location and actual number, along with the fact that it has a saddle ring, that really narrows down the list of potentials. I do not remember if the Marlin Model 1893 (the only other probable choice) was made with a saddle ring?
