I am thinking of going out west elk hunting for the first time this fall. Could anyone give me some advice on where to go (state), and when the seasons are. Any help to point me in the right direction would be great. I live in Iowa and farm so septmber, october and the first week or 2 in november will not work.

One of the largest elk herds in the country is found in North Western New Mexico or South Western Colorado. Montana is a good place to look at as well. Do a Goggle serch for elk hunts and see what comes up. My 2 cents [8D]

There also is some trophy elk hunting in NorthEast Colorado near Loveland. It depends on what your interests are, what kind of landscape you can handle, how much money you want to invest, do you have preference points, gun, muzzleloader, or bow, and just bull, or would you be satisfied with a cow? I highly recommend looking into a guided hunt which costs more, but opens better land and increases your odds for success. I researched areas, guides, and costs for 5 years before my first hunt. 0 -
My brother has lived and hunted in Colorado for over twenty years. He thinks the elk hunting there is the best provided you can find a spot that is not overrun with hunters. He spends all year finding such spots and applying for area tags.Colorado has great public hunting lands but has a problem with guys using ATVs crawling all over the more accessible portions of them. My brother doesn't always shoot a big trophy bull but he rarely fails to get his elk! 0 -
Check various fish and game websites. they usually post everything you want to know including success rates.fishandgame.idaho.gov

Ditto what warcrob said on the websites. -- Montanna and Wyoming are both good in addition to the others listed above. The area just East of Yellowstone N.P. is good in Wyoming. -- Alot of these states will require that you have a state licensed hunting guide if your from out of state. Look in the back of some of the better known hunting magazines for outfitters ads in addition to web searches....good luck..........[8D] 0 -
I don't need no stinking guide!

New Mexico has a great amount of elk in it. That's where I live and can take you out and show you between 100 and 200 elk a day without much problem at all. I used to guide on Vermejo Park for Pennzoil (now it is owned by Ted Turner} and on this 484,000 acre ranch you could see 400-500 a day. You've missed the application dedline for this year but get ahold of the NM dept of Game and Fish and they can supply you with the names of private land owners that get licenses to hunt on their land other than the dates you indicated. I live in area 36 in the south-central mountains adjacent to the Mescalaro Apache Indian Reservation.
Thanks,
Lance

YOU SHOULD CONSIDER A GUIDED HUNT IF YOUR TROPHY HUNTING. IT'S TOUGH HUNTING ELK IN AN UNFAMILIAR AREA . BEING ON YOUR OWN AND WITHOUT HAVING TIME TO SCOUT THE AREA IS EXTREMELY TOUGH HUNTING. PACKING A BULL ELK OUT OF THE HIGH COUNTRY IS HARD WORK EVEN WITH AN ATV OR BY HORSEBACK . THERE'S PLACES UP THERE THAT THE ONLY WAY YOUR GONNA GET AN 600 LB. - 900LB. ELK OUT IS TO MAKE A FIRE ,THEN COOK AND EAT HIM.WITH AN OUTFITTER YOU CAN BE BACK AT CAMP WITH YOUR BUDDIE'S HAVING A DRINK AND TELLING LIE'S WHILE THEY DO THE WORK .
M&M OUTFITTERS IN CRAIG CO. WILL GIVE A HUNT TO REMEMBER . TOM & SUE ARE SOME OF THE FINEST PEOPLE YOU WILL EVER MEET . I HOPE WHERE EVER YOU DECIDE TO HUNT THERE'S A BULL ELK WITH YOUR NAME ON'EM .
GOOD LUCK !!

greetings iowan...ex-iowan here...come here to colorado, and hunt the whiteriver national forest..a.) reasonable out of state rates considering other western states B.) over the counter bull liscenses ( many states have already held their drawings for limited liscences and few , if any others offer over the counter ) c.) white river national forest was once and may still be home to the largest elk herd in the world d) wasting disease isnt a big issue in this area.e) multiple seasons in september october november december and january ( earliest and latest are drawing though ) f) herds are becomimg so big that the division of wildlife routinely offers leftover and damage control hunts.........this is what i know about my state; hopefully, others will give you reasonable amounts of info on their states so you can make an educated choice; goodluck ! 0 -
