"Marcas Registradas" S&W?

Does somebody knows why is wrote in any Smith & Wesson gun "Marcas Registradas" in spanish? when could be Registered or TradeMark for instance in english? A doubt since long time. Thank you for any answer.

  I always thought it was Latin for "Registered Trademark', the reference being to the intertwined "S" and "W" within the stamp. But I'm old and feeble according to my children so don't take anything I say seriously.

  For awhile S&W was owned by a Brazilian Company and I believe the name of the company was Bangor Punta. During this time all S&W's I've seen were marked that way and in no way affects the value.

  i just bought an old 686 last week and the box said, sure enough, smith and wesson

  As I know Bangor Punta owned S&W and Taurus at same time during the 70's.
  Even the current S&W models has this mark and in spanish not portuguese as expected from stuff coming from Brasil. Thanks.

  Can't tell you why it is in spanish instead of Portugese as it is the official language of Brasil. I've been to Santiago and Concepcion in 1979 with the US Navy-BEAUTIFUL people, city and country-really loved the inland waterway and the city of Punta Aranas (forgive the spelling).

  "Marcas Registradas" is correct in both Spanish and Portuguese.
  
  Since I have been studying Greek lately, I'll give a more direct translation of the Thermopylae Monument: "Stranger, tell the Lakedaemonians that in agreement with their customs, we lie here."

  I believe it may also be latin, and ndbilly may be correct as well, but then I'm probably older and sillier than he is. I remember when you could buy a Colt Python from K-Mart for $275.00! Now that's OLD!

  OH!!....what a surprise, I live in Stgo and I like going to the coast often where I can see the sea and Battleships. My Grand father was an officer in the navy and I inherited his interest in ships and naval related things, good thing know about you.
  Still no one has explained Marcas Registradas. Would I die with out knowing it?

  "Marcas Registradas" just means "Registered Trade Mark". Your S&W was most likely made for export to South America, and thus marked.
