a friend of mine was recently given a double bbl shotgun, jc higgins sears and roebuck and it has model 311a on oneside of the receiver and 101.7 on the other he was wondering the year of manufacture of it and any possible value

It was made by Stevens (now Savage) and is their model 311. While these department store guns may be fine shooters, they are usually economy versions of the model sold under the manufacturers name. Guns evaluate only because of collector interest and there is scant interest in the Sears/Wards etc. guns. This this one is likely to sell for less than the Stevens 311 in the same condition, likely by $100 or so. You would have to check with Savage to see how these guns were numbered (if in the same series as the Stevens model) to determine the date of manufacture. 0
