P-38 VALUE / MARKINGS / OPINIONS???

5. RIGHT OF SLIDE: "eagle over 88" and "eagle over swastika" and "eagle over 88" proofs / waffenampts all in a row just forward of the slide serrations.
6. RIGHT OF FRAME: blank / no markings
7. BBL ASSEM / under BBL: "8635" over "o"
8. right BBL ASSEM / under slide: "sunburst proof" and B c
9. left BBL ASSEM / under slide: "eagle over 88" and "cyq"
10. non numbered "jvd" magazine

the gun retains over 75% of its original finish. the bore is perfect, with superb rifling. the gun functions correctly. the saftey works, the mag works, the gun takes down correctly. the right grip panel has a nice sized chip missing from the top. the sights are correct and intact. all the numbers match, even the marked internal parts.

when was it made??? who manufactured it??? what is it worth??? is it of intrest to collectors??? any info, opinions, insight, data, etc...

how readily can the grips be replaced with original panels???

    Your gun was made by Spreewerke in Germany during WWII. While their guns functioned as well as those made by Mauser & Walther, finish was poor in comparison; you will see many deep tool marks on exterior surfaces.

    It has little collector value in the condition you describe. They are common, & can easily be found in 98-100% condition. I would guess that it would sell in the $200-300 range. Gun Parts Corp, & probably a few other military parts dealers have aftermarket replacement stocks.

    the gun was / is beautifuly machined, with almost no tool or die marks present.

    we paid $200.00 for it at the shop, and sold it the same day for WELL over the upper limit of your estimate. i did not have my "good" referance books with me today, and i wanted to make sure i did OK on the deal.

    the buyer seemed happy, and wants us to obtain the grip panels for him. i know little or nothing about P-38`s, but it seemed to be a typical, comman variant to me.

    i did check out the BLUE BOOK, and a very old GUIDE TO MODERN GUN VALUES, but i figured you guys would let me know if i messed up or did OK.

    my boss (the shop owner) has begun to give me a lot of lattitude in pricing guns for sale, and in offering to buy.i am still a little unsure, so i will periodically ask for you opinions.

    the gun is not perfect. 20%-25% loss of bluing, the sharp edges especialy. the grip panel is broken...
    but the BBL was mint, and when i broke the gun down, everthing was well machined and crisp. its all #s matching...
    i hope i did OK...

    Or.........maybe the one you sold has been refinished. The original "bluing" on these is close to a midnight black.

    I posted a Spreewerke in 99% original condition on one of the Internet auctions last year, & only got $475. So, if you got substantially more than my estimate, you did well.

    Gun shops often get more than "market" from unsophisticated buyers. But, gun shops deserve it, because they offer the buyer a chance to hold the gun in his hands before he buys; he takes no chance on getting ripped off by a scam artist.

    i do have the STANDARD CATALOUGE OF MILITARY FIREARMS wich has a nice section in P-38 pistols. while i have several books on LUGER and MAUSER pistols, i need to ad a specific P-38 guide to me library.

    the finish is more black than blue, and is on the flat / dull side. while my boss is often happy to turn a small, quick profit right away, i prefer to do some research. i do not want to sell a gun at a small, quick profit, and find out it was worth much more.

    part of the whole research process is to LEARN more than you knew before. i guess that with more authority and independane comes more responsability. best regards, mike.
