25-36 remington
I saw a remington model 8 chambered for 25-36 caliber at an auction this weekend. When was this caliber made and how did it perform? The ammo seemed like it would have been a fairly decent round when it came out. As always thanks for your replies.

If you saw a Remington Model 8 actually chambered for 25-36 (Marlin), it is NOT factory original. The Model 8 was factory chambered for the .25 Rem, .30 rem, .32 Rem, and .35 Rem cartridges, with the .25 Rem being a near ballistic twin to both the 25-35 W.C.F. and the 25-35 Marlin, but it differed in that it was/is a rimless cartridge (as were all of the cartridges chambered in the Model 8). I suppose it might be possible to convert a Model 8 to a rimmed cartridge, but one really has to ask the question "Why[?]", especially to the much more obscure 25-36 Marlin cartridge.

To the best of my knowledge, there was never such a critter produced by the Remington Arms Company/UMC....at least for the model 8. There was the rimless .25 caliber Remington round that was produced in some small quantity. .25, .30, and.35 Remington were the factory choices if memory serves. The .25 caliber was produced in by far the least numbers and is a bit more collectable for that reason, but not hugely so. I would assume that the -36 suffix on the nomenclature you saw would have been referring perhaps to the charge weight? That is a guess, as I have really no idea to what they refer!

Hello, The 25-36 was basically a Marlin Cartridge. I have several 2 piece boxes and will check what boxes have on them. Somestimes the old boxes have more info on them. I'm packed for a Gun Show and it will be a couple of days.

Todd, first off, welcome to the zoo!
The .25-36 was purely a Marlin cartridge ballistically - but not dimensionally - identical to the .25-35 WCF. It is a rimmed cartridge based on the .30 WCF head design. It would have required all sorts of major work to feed it through the action of Model 8. As others have noted, this was never a factory chambering in this firearm.
Having said that, Remington-UMC briefly produced .30 Rem ammo with a ".30-30 REM" headstamp (possibly US Cartridge as well?) and possibly they designated the .25 Rem as the ".25-36 Remington" on its introduction (then as now, there was a lot of hyperbole in cartridge names for competitive marketing reasons). If I had this piece, my first step would be to have a 'smith do a chamber casting to verify *exactly* the chamber dimensions (= cartridge). If this firearm is actually chambered for the .25 Rem and marked as described, I would suspect you had an extraordinarily rare piece. If it turns out to be the rimmed cartridge, you have something weird which was altered for some crazy reason, as the semi-auto action works so much better with a rimless round.

Hello, I have two identical boxes of .25-36-117 The boxes read Manufactured by The Union Metallic Cartridge Co. For Marlin Magazine Rifles. 25 Cal Smokeless Powder with 117 gr soft point bullet. It has the rimmed cartridge on the side of the top piece and the same info is on the Cartridge shown. Hope this helps.
