C96 Mauser information
I just bought my first broomhandle and would appreciate some help. First, there seems to be an Imperial Japanese chrysanthamum stamped on receiver near barrel, is this possible? Second, KOLUZ37 is stamped on backstrap, any idea what this means? Serial number (32xxx) puts it in 1910-1914 range from what I can find. Have found what appears to be pistol proof mark and an "S", which from what I can find is an army acceptance mark. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I saw a 96 set with stock and harness the owner recovered from a Japanese tank in the Pacific theater during WW2. Don't recall whether it
had any Japanese markings. He wanted to trade for my Ordnance marked Savage 720.
I backed out and regretted it for about 35 years.0 -
There is a similar marking, reportedly found on some "Standard Modell" Mauser Rifles made for the Chinese Government, circa 1920's/30's.
The center round "hole" portion of the marking is much larger in diameter then the one found in the Japanese Chrysanthemum marking. Also the outer "circle" portion of the Chinese marking is perfectly round without the stylized "petals", of the Japanese Chrysanthemum marking.

There was a fake mum on a S&W revolver floating around on either GB or Auct_onAr_s a while back. Don't know if it ever sold.
A Imperial mum on a non-Japanese weapon is probably a fake. Most European weapons captured in battle are private purchase or battle captures, hence not a gift from the emperor.
The Chinese did have the CircleWheel to denote acceptance, but most Chinese Broomhandles were warlord purchase and would only have "Made In Germany" in Kanji on the left side of the magazine well.
I have not seen markings as you describe before.

Thanks guys. The marking is not circular, but uneven. The weapon has waffenbrik markings in front of the receiver and on the right side. It has mill marks in the panels and the small hole hammer. All the numbers match. It's at the gunsmith at the time, getting a well-deserved through cleaning/inspection. When I get it back, I can add a little more info. No luck on the KOLUZ, huh? I did a google on KOLUZ and got a lot of sentences in German with that in the sentences. Now, if I only could read German....[:)] thanks again for the help.

"not circular, but uneven" sounds like Siamese ( Thailand ) "Charkra" symbol. Had a 5mm Clement pistol with that marking on it long ago. It's the stylized symbol of the Kingdom of Siam, and is used as a government property marking.0 -
