300 Remington Ultra Mag, or 300 Weatherby Mag ????
I am looking at purchasing a long range-flat shooting rifle, and have had different people tell me different things-good and bad about the Remington 300 Ultra Mag, and the Weatherby 300 Mag, and they have my head swimming around in circles as too which one shoots flatter, carries more energy down range, and is easier to get ammo for. Can you guys out there give me any guidence as to which way to go here. I will primarily be hunting elk in semi open terrain, with shots of up too 600 yards.

here in elk country, they're both hard to come by maybe...maybe the RUM is more common a bit, if not a faster eater of your barrel- they tell me...i don't know which is flatter or harder on em tho. good luck this fall- i wish i was going with you instead of digging them out of the black stuff... 0 -
300RUM is the faster and flatter bullet given identical bullet weights.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

federal 2004 catalog with 24" barrels : the RUM clearly wins . but the weatherby is clearly in second place after the RUM (as far as the .300 mag class goes) both EXTREMELY GREAT cartridges , they will both be pretty expensive and neither are going to be as easy to find as some other cartridges (.270 , 7mm , 30-06 , .308 ) but they wil both do the job EXCELLENT . personally i would go with the RUM .
it has more energy and higher velocities and shoots flatter . but the weatherby kicks the $h!% out of the other .300 mags .

The Remington U.M. case will hold approx. 12%-13% more powder than the Weatherby case. Probably not much difference out in the real world with factory ammo as Weatherby loads theirs hot compared to most of the other companies. Federal Premium is generally some of the fastest for other rounds like the Rem.U.M. -- If you handload the Rem. has alot more potential and is on average more accurate if you can stand the recoil and shoot it well(most people need a good muzzle brake to do so)in my experience. -- Whatever game you shoot with either will never know which round you decided on. I have both but don't feel I could kill anything with one that I couldn't with the other out in the real world. -- Best performance for the dollar the Remington wins hands down due to the price of the rifles and cost of the brass, etc.-- Buy whichever you like the best and don't look back. No matter which one you select, I respectefully urge you to practice at the distances which you plan to attempt a kill. Range estimation problems can be eleminated, or at least reduced with a range finder but you sure need to know the trajectory. At 600 yards wind can be a factor. You may be an experienced target shooter and already know these things but an elk deserves better than to have a leg broken or being gut shot by someone who attempts a shot beyond their skill level. 0 -
Thanks guys! I am totally confused now! Just kidding, I have enough e4xperience to be able to read between the lines, and summing everything up, I pretty much can't go wrong with either one of them.
And to put your mind at ease Herschel, I have hunted for years, and would never take a shot that was marginal for making a clean kill. I respect the animals too much to ever do that. And I completely agree with you, they deserve more respect than to ever have anyone gut shoot them, or break a leg, and let them hobble off to die form coyote attack, or not being able to get enough food to survive. I would quit hunting before I would ever resort to just hunting to get a "shot"
I think I will go with the 300 Weatherby, just because I have the chance to buy one on a pre-64 model 70, that is all original, and has a great scope on it already. I am drooling already! Wish me luck!!!!!!
