Pre 64 Win Mod 70

I have a Mod 70 and I am trying to find date of manufacturing and the possible value. The Serial # is 5754XXXX.
There is an old model Redfield 3x9 scope on it as well.

    Welcome to the forum Topkick. I think you have a few to many X's, winchester hasn't made 57 plus million of these. If you mean: 5754XX that would fall into the 1962, as the year of manufacture.

    Now to establish any kind of value there is more info needed: Condition is very important!! Is it like new, used in good condition? any rust or pits, how is the bore? Has the stock been altered. (recoil pad other than a Winchester been added?
    This is a must what caliber is it? If it's a 257 Roberts it will be worth a lot more than a 30-06. Is it a standard Md 70, Featherweight, Super Grade, etc.

    I have 1 too many x's.
    It is a standard mod. 70. in .270 cal.
    The bore is excellent.
    No stock modifications.
    There was a block mounted for a tang sight but was removed and the 2 screws installed to fill the tapped holes.
    The reciol pad is original with the white spacer.
    No rust, pits, blueing is good with minimal wear.
    Stock shows it was carried, but not abused.

    Ok Top. Now this is only a guesstimate based on your info.
    In the .270 Caliber, and being a "Standard" Md 70 in the following condition:
    95% is approx. $800
    80% is approx. $600
    70% is approx. $500
    That's without a scope. Your Scope has some value on the used market, best to check GB under the scope section. Again different parts of the country you can go higher or lower. Grading a firearm is subjective at best. You may grade one at 90% and I may grade the same gun at 80%. The best way to get a price on what people are willing to spend do a search here on GB on Md 70s, and see what the winning bids are. Use only your caliber, (.270) like I said earlier a .257 Roberts will bring a lot more in the same condition. Hope this helps you. Regards Dave

    This really helps. I guess the best course of action is formal appraisal as I don't know if it is 60, 70,80,or 90%.
    It will help me decide to sell or keep it for my kids.
    I already have a 15 yr old Mod 70 with the laminated stock, but it does not shoot tight 2' or so at 100. My buddy's 30.06 will do clover leafs for me. I plan to shoot this one soon and see how it performs. Then sell the later version.

    Top: Keep your pre-64 over your Laminated Md 70. The pre-64 will hold it's value and or go up depending on how you take care of it.
    If you take your gun into the local gunshop for a quick appraisal, tell them it's for insurance purposes, not that your interested in selling it.
    Like I said earlier, look at the closed auctions here at GB. The pictures will tell you what kind of condition it's in you'll find one that's comparible. Regards Dave

    It is highly unlikely that your rifle came with a recoil pad with a whiteline spacer. Correct butt plate should be hard rubber composite often refered to as plastic. Depending on final grading I would probably deduct about $100.00 from earlier prices. Still a better shooter than the laminate stock but probably not a collector. Hope this helps.

    Actually Snickers the Md 70 came with different butt plates or recoild pads. Yes they did come with the bakilite, black plate, (some think it's plastic but it's hard rubber), or a metal butt plate. They also used the old 1 in. thick solid red rubber recoil pad. Since this gun was made in 1962 they were using the Vented red rubber pad. This pad had a white layer about 1/16 to 3/32 thick bonded to a black piece about 1/8 in bonded to the red vented rubber. If I remember correctly winchester contracted with Pachmyer to make this pad. It was also used on there shotguns of that period. Meaning after they stopped using the solid red rubber pad.

    This gun has the vented recoil pad. Slightly reddish color and does have the white spacer.
    I do think it is a keeper.
    My laminated version which does not group may be gone.
    But $110 gets me a bedded action. HHHHMMMMMMMM....
