Model 94 Timber or 1895G?
I really want a large caliber lever action gun, and have a choice between these two. Winchester 94 Timber in .450 or Marlin 1895G in 45\70 or .450 Both are similar in price, any suggestions?
Thanks again.

I've shot my Marlin 1895G for 4 years now with all manner of loads and cannot saythat I have been able to lodge ant complaints against it. I have also shot a few Timbers lately and was happy with what I saw out of them as well, but have put nowhere near the rounds through them so a direct vis a vis comparison is a little difficult for me to forward here. My best advice would be to see which weapon shoulders best for you and for that matter, which one you find the most aesthetically pleasing. The 1895G's reciever is a bit more bulky and I think a few percent stronger so perhaps the strength nod goes to the Marlin. I have never liked the bottom side on the 1894 Winchester but that is personnal taste so take it with a grain of salt. One point to consider is that the 45/70 round is a bit more readily available than the 450 so when in the sticks ammunition availability would be less of a concern with the 45-70. There are also some seriously effective rounds loaded for the venerable old classic by Buffalo amongst others that will really wring the most out of the cartridge. Me personally...I like the Marlin, but both are fine guns.

Thanks 1KYDSTR for your advise. After much deliberation I've decided on the Marlin. {about 30sec's} Not sure what it is about this gun, I just have to have one! Does anyone know if you can put a fibre optic sight on this gun? My main reason for buying this gun other then just cause is for when I'm Hiking\fishing\camping in Grizz country it just makes me feel safer. Back to the sight, it sure helps in being able to see where your pointing when it gets dark out, but I cannot find a kit\site on the internet for one. Thanks again.
P.s anyone heard of garret cartridges? Or used them? let me know what you think. Her's the link http://www.garrettcartridges.com/

Due to my eyesight, I put a shotgun 4X scope on my Marlin 1895G.
It provides 5" eye relief- good, so I don't get hit in the face.
Shoots cloverleafs!
My friends always want to give it a try and a smile is always on their face!
I carry it in dangerous S. Texas country where you could be attacked by our large hares, snakes, or cactus!
Really though, it is my favorite gun!0 -
Topkick has a great suggestion there. You could also get one of the A.O. Sight Systems (Ashley Outdoors) Scout mounts and use an inexpensive 2x or 3x pistol scope (BSA comes to mind) for an even better level of eye relief. I wear coke bottle glasses (not kidding either...I correct to 20/20 but without them am blind as the proverbial bat!) and all I use is a Williams brand reciever sight. The Front bead from the factory is high Viz brass so I have no problems with it ay all. If I put in the small rear apperature and shoot my 455 gr G.C. leads off a bench, I can shade "1 1/2 at 100 yds with as many as 20 consecutive rounds(then the tube heats up and it starts to climb!). And thats using full boat bear killer rounds! I've actually gotten 5 interconecting rounds @ 50 yds. using a bit milder load. I can scarcely imagine what this gun would do with a good scope!!! These are just amazing rifles and are capable of astounding accuracy for a lever gun right off the shelf! Forgot to mention mine is a ported model and as long as you are not standing next to it, there is NO problem with this set-up at all!

Congratulations!! I think you made an excellent decision and surely hope you enjoy your need toy! Also, after doing a little more reading and comparison, I now feel the Marlin is significantly more than a "few percent" stronger than the Winchester too!

I did too. With the Lazer surgery I went from 20/650 to 20/30. They now have far better procedures than they had then. You can't imagine
how nice it is to do something as simple as reading an alarm clock without having to put on your glasses.0
