Need Help With .223 Loads Using Win748 &40g VMAX
Any suggestions on a starting point using Win 748 and 40g VMAX bullets? I've had great success with 748 loaded under a Sierra 52g HPBT and just wanted to see if I could use the same powder with the lighter bullet. Winchester hasn't updated any of their load data on their web site in a couple of years.

I load 28 grains of 748 under a 40 grain V-Max. This is a very accurate load in my Ruger #1V.

As a general rule stepping down on bullet weight is pretty safe to do as long as you step up proportionaltly on powder weight, avoiding compressing the powder. I try to extrapolate the info from looking at a similar powder that is listed in both bullet weights and note the increase in charge weight, and then ,staying at the lower limits of reccommended charge weight, substitute the subject powder under the lighterbullet. Doing this the other way around with a heavier bullet and reducing the charge weight can obviously be very, very hazardous! I will have to say, also, that I do not warrant this practice(for either practice), but it has worked well for me over the years and as long as one uses good componentry in good condition in a rifle in good condition, it can be done!

I load very similar to what PJ said. -- I worked up my loads off of data for the Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets in the Nosler Fifth Edition Manual and worked up for the Hornady V-MAX bullets.--Start at 26.0 grains of W-748 for the 40 grain V-MAX and 28.0 Grains is maximum in most guns. Between 27.5 grs and 28.0 grs has been the most accurate in three different bolt action 223s that I have shot it in of my own and several friends guns too.-- I settled on 27.8 grains of W-748 with Winchester brass, Winchester SR Primer and the 40 grain V-MAX as it shot well in all of my guns and had one with a tight chamber that showed signs of pressure if I went to 28 grs or higher.-- Good luck and use this data with caution and work up slowly in your gun as it may react differently in yours. -- And yes, your gun is plenty strong for these loads..............[8D] 0 -
As temblor said, start low and work up. I have shot the V-MAX's with up to 29 grains of 748 with no pressure signs, but the 28 grain load is the most accurate.

I also use 748 28.0 grs with a 40gr v-max moly coated very good combo. Shoot this in a DPMS Panther (ar15) and in VLS 700 Remington. Range is great out to 250 yds at 300 yds ok, at 350 can't see past that to old. have fun with that load, didn't seem to make much difference.

I use 26gr of 748 in my 700vls with 50-55gr. They are running along the 3200fps range. I have started with varget now. And it likes 27.5 all day long.

ryan marine : I didn't mention Varget above because he asked about W-748 but I load the same charge as you ( 27.5 grains )under 50 grain bullets in 223 and it shoots great. Only problem is to make sure I don't trim the cases to short or it's hard to get all the powder in the case.Usually shoots less than 1/2" five or six shot groups at 100yds with the Speer TNT 50 gr.( which I like because they are cheap and accurate and hard on Varmits ).-- NOTE** : Anyone else reading this please note this is a Maximum compressed charge ** and you should work up charges slowly in your gun. Data is listed in the Speer #13 Reloading Manual...........[8D] 0
