Why was the Ruger security six discontinued?
I just came from a local gun show. I saw Ruger security six's for sale as well as it's replacement, the Ruger GP 100. Does anyone know why Ruger didcontinued the production of security six's in 1985?? Does anyone know of problems with either model above? Thanks.

Ruger Security Six 6" my VERY first store bought pistol. Ahhhhhh the found memories, even bought a Speed Six 2" right after I think they were $197.50ea Don't know why but the 686 kicked it's ass all over the place. Can I say ass here??? I miss mine sold it in 1984 to buy my Harley that I still have, anyone have an idea what the used prices are anymore

Had owned two at various times while I worked armored. One of the best guns I ever owned, sold them for a colt 1911.

Ruger's first SA/DA side-swing revolver was a hump-backed Security Six. Within a year its grip frame was altered to better control revolver's movement during recoil. Change was incremental product improvement.
Next improvement was in the form of a significantly more durable cylinder assembly lock. But this occurred on a new class of revolvers, the Redhawk. Bye 'n' bye, the product improvement trickled down to their more mainstream revolver, the Security Six. But Ruger felt the lock-up improvement was significant enough to warrant a product designation change. BEHOLD, the GP series.
Since the basic lock-up of the Security Six series is similar to Smith & Wesson's and Taurus' basic lock-up, there was nothing wrong with it.
All that occurred is Ruger managed to incorporate a significantly more rigid, more durable crane/yolk lock remarkably similar in function to Smith & Wesson's New Century First Model aka "Triple Lock" design.
Among the three Rugers, the first version is by far the most collectible. Looks like something the cat dragged in, but it's scarce. Hope this helps.0 -

Change is not always good. I liked the Security Six much better than the GP100. It was lighter, better balanced, and had a better trigger.

I love my Security Six, for some reason mine has a great trigger in SA and DA...
They will give you years of reliable service and can be picked up for less than 200$ in blue or 250$ in SS.
I'm now looking for a speed six in 3" SS to carry...

dbarale if you can find them for 200 you had better buy all you can at that price, around these parts 250 -300 for blued ones is not out of line , and you hardy ever see a stainless up for sell , 0 -
PIcked mine up for 200$ out of the store, nice and tight with a little holster wear on the blueing. There is a SS 6" at 275$ at the local pawn shop but I'm sure it is negotiable.
This is in the Florida panhandle.
And yes I will buy another one if I can get my hands on a nice 2 3/4" speed six SS... [;)]

I shoot a security six regularly and last time I shot the qualifying round with the cops, there was only one cop who could beat me, and he is the best I have ever seen. That Sec. 6 is a daisy of a wheelgun and dependable as they come.
Wish they still made it. No problems with that pistola!!!
