43 spanish brass

I was looking to buy some 43 spanish brass and noted on the midway site some bad reviews for the bell brass. I though that bell was some of the better stuff. One guy recommended bertram, but I've had 25-20 ss in bertram and was not happy with it. What is the best stuff to get? thanks

    Don't know how old your Remington brass is, or what kind of primers it was originally loaded with? But I had problems with with old Kynoch brass that had mercuric primers. The brass virtually self-destructed when I tried to reform it, i.e. the chemicals in the mercury residue, attacked the brass and made it unuseable.

    I'VE GOT SOME BERTRAM BRASS FOR MY .43 (FROM MIDWAY) AND IT WORKS WELL. I'VE ALSO USED THEIR .50/70 BRASS. BELL IS SUPPOSED TO BE BETTER BUT THE NEWER BERTRAM BRASS SEEMS TO BE OK.

    Hello, I should have said unfired shells. The Remingtons are loaded shells. I believe if fired then deprimed and cleaned there should be no issue. This is Rem - UMC. Many millions of cases reloaded from early shells. If fired primers allowed to sit for long periods of time I can see a possible issue but not if fired, deprimed and cleaned.

    I've gotten 41LC with bad dimensions from Bertram and properly sized brass from Bell, both through Midway

    I have both Bertram .43 cases and Bell .43 cases. The first Bertram cases I bought(200 cases), about 8 out of 10 split on the first firing after being loaded. I had bought them off Fred Huntington and he replace every one that split. I have dealt with Fred on several occassions with this and other reloading problems and have found him to be knowledgeable and friendly to deal with. The last phone number I had for him is from 1992: 916-534-1210. His address is P.O. Box 991, 601 Oro Dam Blvd., Oroville, California 95965. He even made a neck size only die for me in .43 Spanish. It's been quite a while since I talked to him and I'm assuming he is still here with us--you never know when you get to be His and My age. By the way, the Bell brass that I had was from the old Bell Company and had such thick walls that I had to turn it down to fit the chamber by hand and it is hard to re-size but it should last a long time. Also Cabela's used to have .43 in loaded ammo, I don't know if they still do but you could check with them. I have a few Remington cases from the 1890's but it is berdan primed and I don't shoot it much, you can reload it with RWS primbers but they are both expensive and a hassle to deal with. Good luck.

    Pinhead : FYI -- Fred Huntington passed away in 1998. There is an acknowledgement to him in the Speer #13 Reloading Manual. The same company that owns Speer bullets owns RCBS which he started many years ago. -- However, "Huntingtons" shop is still in business at the same address you listed above.............................................

    temblor: Thanks for bringing me up to speed on Fred. I was truly sorry to hear that he had passed. I had not talked to him since the early part of the 90's. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable and honest. Any information you got from him, you could take to the bank. If he said it, he had either tried it himself or had personal knowledge that it worked. He was a rarity in these times-an honest man who valued his word above money.

    Hello,

    I use 43 Spanish brass that I consider to be the best brass made for this caliber. It was made by N.D.F.S. which was a Canadian company I believe that is no longer in business. It is turned from bar stock and will last a lifetime if used with BP. I use this brass in my Martini-Henry and 43 Mauser and of course my 43 Spanish Remington, and it is by far the best.
