registering guns

hi, kinda new to the forum and the whole gun ownership deal...with each gun i purchase do i have to go to my local authorities and register it with them or is it automatically registered at time of purchase by the BATF?[?]

    You register a gun right when you buy it by filling out a form and they call the batf and check you out.

    There are also extra things needed to be done for "assault rifles" and handguns in a lot of states.

    ok....thanks for the info it was very helpful...its just that i have a few rifles and MASS is now banning the sales of ak-47s and any bushmasters and look alikes and i was told you can still by them out of state and bring them back but the only way you can retain them is if they are unregistered...so i thought that i had done something wrong by not going to my local police and registering the rifles (non ak or bushmasters) with them

    Is that something new, when I did not renew my FFL in the late eighties I was under the assumption that what you said about records is correct...until I reveived a certified letter from ATF demanding that I turn in my bound book and 4473s to someplace in Virginia I believe it was ATF Records depository..,..I let my lawyer handle that and he did indeed transfer the records to them as they demanded

    Thanks for the quick response (YOu really should be out motoring..dont tell me its raining out there!!)

    I heard that the records were being logged into computers starting sometime into the Clinton Reign...Even if they are not being entered into a data bank whats the purpose of the record books and 4473s being turned in..doesnt this amount to a national registry?

    It doesn't constitute a registry, because they can't look up a person and find out how many and which guns they have. They can however trace the ownership of a certain gun with the records. If a gun is found at a crime scene they can trace it to find out who the last legal owner was. That is what the records are used for. I also heard that Janet Reno kept records of every gun sale for a Six month period. She was breaking the law if she did, but I don't think she cared.

    alot of states do not have register you're gun. when you transfer or buy from a gun shop, the form you sign just says you're the last person to buy that gun legally thrugh a dealer. they can't look up you're name and tell what guns are in your possesion. if you sell someone a gun privately in most states you don't, or can't register it. here in wisconsin, there is no way to register a firearm. i asked my friend who works at the d.o.j. and she said very few states do it. cody
