Coyote Calling

Well, I figure I ought to learn how to call in a coyote at some point in my life, and I see no reason to put it off like I do some of my other goals. What's the best way to get started, and the best time of year to start? (If it depends on location, give some examples, as I'm no more stuck to this town than I am to this chair.)

    Well I go out hunting coyotes between january and march as they are out and about more so during the day. I use an electronic caller with either the squealing rabbit or the group coyote tapes.

    Hey Zerodin, you might look back to 3/12/04 in the general discussion forum under Hunting Coyotes, Crosshair posted a question and there was some good info and some other info provided. Look at my post on that topic and honestly you can't go wrong, doesn't matter if you play tapes or a mouth blown call, doesn't seem to matter what time of year although I've only hunted Coyotes from Fall to spring through the winter, I don't have time in the summer. Have fun and good luck.
    PS: Keep your eyes open, I don't know what part of the country you are in but you never know what might sneak in on your calling!

    The electronic (digital) callers work great. A hand squeeker is good also to keep them coming in. My question to you is what are you out to get from this. Are you fur hunting or just getting great off season field shooting practice? If you are fur hunting then you need to hunt when the fur is best and that is the depths of winter. If you live where it gets cold and the furs get good then off season shooting isn't a great idea as there will be less for the taking when the furs get good. There are some really good tapes on the market that can help. Blain Eddys "hunting and skinning for profit" is good if you want to know what to do with the furs after you've got them.

    Thanks for the replies. My primary motivation is off-season fieldcraft and hunting practice, but the point about "kill 'em now, there'll be less later" is very valid and it'd be nice to get 'em in the winter.

    The unfortunate thing is that it's hard enough to get back to ND for deer season, much less for misc. winter hunting. Maybe at Christmas or Thanksgiving I'll be able to head home (going back to school means I get holidays again, hooray!).

    Is there a specific call I would best start with? I don't want to spend a lot of dollars, but quality wins out over frugality almost every time with me. Who knows, I might be able to go out and practice calling without a gun and get most of the benefit without having to shoot ugly pelts. [:)]

    If you go the electronic way, put a feline distress tape in your gear bag, works wonders when they hang up at long distance[;)]

    ZERODIN--- I have used several different coyote calls including the electronic type and the one that I have had the most success with is a diaphram mouth call that imitates crying puppy whimpers. Experiment and when the first coyote comes into your call it makes for a memory that will last a lifetime.

    The best time to go coyote hunting is when ever you can! They are always hungry, hunting, and stalking, so you just have to be sneaker than they are.
    A group of boys (15 year olds) that hunted with us old folks decided to go out at night and call a few coyote's in just too see what would happen. They (the boys) had an electronic call, working off a tape recorder, with removable speakers, that could be set out about five feet from the main unit. The boys had a shotgun with 00 buck, and a Winchester 243 with them, and at about eight o'clock they put out theircall, and huddeled down together, back to back to back. After about ten minutes of running the call, in came the biggest coyote they had ever set eyes on, which procceded to jump in the middle of the speakers and tore them all to hell!
    The boys never even saw him coming, until he jumped on the "prey" and tore it up. Needless to say, they never got a shot off because they were too busy cleaning the poop out of their shorts, and when they got back too camp, you could not believe the size of their eyes!
    Fromthen on, they understood that they were the hunted, not the hunters, when it came to calling coyotes! Just another great camp story! Hope you enjoyed![:D][:)]

    I'd go out in the desert (I'm in AZ right now) for sure and do the twilight hunt, camp, and dawn hunt if I knew enough about staying safe from snakes here. I stay away from 'em in ND because I've spent enough time in the outdoors there, but I'm still afraid and freaked out by the suckers, and as I understand it they're not even the greatest of my concerns in the Sonoran. [B)]
