You can get a new plain stocked Marlin 1894 for $299.00 at Big 5.

I always considered the .444 marlin round a 150 yard gun and the .44 mag a 100 yard and under gun. I don't have the .444 anymore either for the same reason.
I really like the old style ruger .44 mag carbines. The new ones feel like thier "mini" series and I just don't like them for a hunting rifle. Several companies also make .44 lever guns too. The prices for .44 mag rifles now range from $200 to $500 depending on which one. Here's the Ruger .44 mag carbine I own, it's called a "fingergroove sporter" and is a little more expensive than thier standard carbine:

    redice,
Since I don't feel like doing a bunch of typing right now,
using the "search",type in "Ruger 44 mag carbine".There's a dozen there that will give you an idea of what they're going for.I've got the original model and I love it.

I absoulutely love my Winchester Trapper (16" barrel) .44 mag. It holds a bunch of rounds in the tube, maybe it's 10+1? Never counted, however decent sites, nice wood, has not jammed in perhaps 500+ rounds. It is always handy out here in the boondocks, it gets shot almost every other day. It's not cheap blasting ammo but the Hornaday 300 grains keeps 'em down.

Was looking at a MArlin earlier today in 44 Mag. that I thought to be a real honey! $400 out the door and a nice looking piece of wood. Also loved the 1894 Cowboy they had in 32-20 (not suffesting you get this for your purpose...I just fell in love with it!)for $650 out the door! I currently have an 1895 guide gun that is one of the best shooting guns I own...Marlin really has it together for the lever gun fan! I suggest you go the Marlin route as they really perform at a decent prce as well.
