You have to be specific about which 9mm cartridge your talking about.

The Astra 400 was originally chambered for the Spanish Military cartridge, which is the 9mm Largo. The chamber dimensions and bolt face dimensions are very generous which enables you to fire a number of cartridges, including .38 ACP, 9mm Steyr, 9 x 23 etc.

In pistols chambered for the 9mm Luger cartridge, which are much more common, you can't chamber or fire .38 ACP cartridges or the other cartridges mentioned above.

A 1911 can shoot both 38 super and 9x19 luger, with a swap of barrel and mag. It can also shoot 9x23 Winchester. With a swap of ejector, slide group and mag, it can shoot .45, .22, 10mm, and many other calibers. Nothing else in handguns is as versatile. The newer spld 1911's have a different ejector, so that you don't have to swap ejectors to change from 9mm to.45, or vice versa.

Shooter1, see my reply to the thread on ".38 won't chamber." All the nominal .38 & 9mm rounds use bullets in the range of .355 - .360" range, but those .001" increments are critical. Nominally, 9mm is a .355 - .356" bullet while the .38 varieties take bullets in the range of .357 - .360" . . . they are first cousins, but generally not identical, although there are exceptions. Case dimensions, headspacing, etc., can also vary enormously although sometimes those differences are subtle enough that they may not be apparent to the naked eye. I don't know about the Astra and would defer to folks like Mark who've forgotten more about firearms than I will ever learn, but it is real easy to get into serious trouble substituting . . . even if the exterior dimensions are "close enough," the standard loadings almost certainly vary . . . and possibly critically so.

Thank you all! for your help this is very Confusing subject with 9x19 9x21 9x23 and 38 acp. I would never use Ammunition that was not specified for use in a firearm.
