22 Hornet Help

I've been thinking of buying a 22 hornet. Can someone recommend a nice small light 22 hornet. A bolt or single, demostic or foreign. I would perfer a shot barrel, twentytwo inches or less. And as close to five pounds or less as I can get it. Even if it's not produced anymore let me know the make and model and I will start the hunt for info and the gun. Handled a ruger no #3 yesterday way to heavy for me. Any Ideas please drop me a line or if you know someone that has one for sale. Thankyou Beltfed ghubbar@bellsouth.net

    Take a look at the CZ-527 if you are looking for a .22 Hornet. 22" barrel, 5 round magazine and weighes around 6 pounds. Sounds like it might just fit your needs.

    I agree the CZ with single set trigger would be a good recommendation. The BRNO ZKB 680 would be my first choice because it is a gorgeous, finely made mini Mauser with double set triggers. I wouldnt bet any money that the BRNO is more accurate than the CZ though because barrel technology has improved since the BRNO was made.
    Savage made their low end model 340 in 22 Hornet. You can chop one up and lighten it to suit yourself without feeling you have destroyed a collectible.

    Taking v35's suggestion a step farther; If you can locate a BRNO ZKW 465 Hornet Sporter by all means purhcase it as these were one of the finest .22 Hornet rifles made, using a miniature Mauser action, double set triggers and a nifty three leaf express sight (just like the big boys use). My old boss had one of these BRNOs and it was a fantastic little rifle. If money is not too much of an issue you should take a look at the Anschutz 1730 or 1740 series or for less cash, the Weihrauch HW 66...all are great rifles.

    Someone earlier this spring asked about a new Savage called the
    40 Varmint Hunter. Comes in .22Hornet,.223 and now the .204 Ruger. Factory list on the .22 Hormet is $374, laminated stock, single load, short action, weighs 7.75 lbs. Looks interesting. There's also the Ruger 77/22 hornet.

    Too bad you didn't lke the No 3...it's one of my favorites. Shot a buddies last week and was really thrilled withthe results using 45 gr winchester factory loads. Most of what has been suggested seems like kind of high end expensive stuff and I didn't notice if you felt price was a major consideration. The only Hornet I shoot these days is my old Savage 342 that I picked up for a touch over $200 last year. The last one I saw for sale was going $350 so I have to dissagre that "chopping one up" wouldn't be considered less than a stellar idea. They are starting to get a little expensive and they are a nice, handy and fairly light gun so thus make a nice little field gun. If price isn't too much of a consideration the CZ or the Brno are both excellent choices as is the Anshutz but all are a little bit expensive for me! I personally don't much like the Rugers mainly because of the trigger; I would have to think the new Savage would be a better choice for that reason alone. At any rate, get a Hornet; I think you will be really happy with the round. Nice low report and as long as you stay light on the bullet (under 45 grains) they tend to be really accurate and effective on varmint sized game!

    Look at New England firearms Handi-Rifles they are some nice singe shots.They are very accurate and light weight.

    The NEF Handi-Rifle is OK but you might want to have the barrel machined thinner or have it fluted to reduce the weight. If I were to pick up another Hornet, I'd keep my eyes open for an older Savage 340 or Stevens 325. All the Savage 340's I've owned(Hornet,.222,.223,30-30) have all been tack-drivers. I was at the range last year and there an older retired fella there shooting a 340 in 30-30 but he was firing single shot instead of through the clip. Apparently he had done his homework and the reloads he was shooting had the bullets seated high in the case neck and the overall length exceeded the length of the mag. Without a word of a lie, he was pulling off 1" groups @ 200yds! The 340's are trading in Canada right now for $100-300 CDN. What they are trading for State-side, I couldn't even guess.
