Colt Police Positive 38
I recently acquired a Colt Police Positive in cal .38 with a 1905 patent date. I believe it was manufactured between 1907 and 1927. I would like to clarify what cartridge was specified for this revolver. I know a .38 S&W will fit but the brass casing looks slightly shorter (approx 1/16 to 1/8 inch) than the indentation within the cylinder. Is that the correct cartridge or might it be a .38 short colt or something else. Thanks.

A lot of these like diameter but disparate length rounds were interchangeable as long as the smokeless vs. black powder moratoriums are followed. You Police Positive IS proofed for smokeless powder so I would think a lot of them would be O.K. I am not sure, however, if your gun is chambered for 38 S&W Special and would assume it is not unless marked so. Check a copy of Cartridges of the World to make sure! Also, many of the appraisal books out there are going to list what various calibers were chambered so check them as well.
