customizing 10/22
I have a ruger 10/22 with a synthetic stock and a stainless reciever and barell this is factory out of the box. It shoots well but I am interested in customizing it into the long range "tack driver" I've heard about. I have looked into many of the products by butler creek. Can anyone recommend a good set up for this? I am a little overwhelmed at all of the choices. Is there a large difference in installing a competition hammer and sear like the one from the cabela's catalog or is this better done by a skilled gunsmith? Realisticly what type of accuracy and range can be achieved? Thanks again for any advice.

buy the trigger group by Power Custom. I like it alot more than Volquestran(sp). It is not too hard to install. Just study the trigger before you take it apart, as the way the hammer and sear sit can be kind of tricky.

Regardless of what you do, the gun will be limited by the caliber. There are a lot of neat things you can do to the 10/22's and the mentioned trigger group by Power Custom is a nice unit. The Millet scope mounts I put on mine made quite the differenceas well. Just remember, the 22 is more or less a 100 yd. MAXIMUM kind of round and I think if you want a long range tack driver you need to go centerfire. The 17 MR is fine out to a little more than a hundred but that 17 gr bullet is really affected by the wind. My own lightly modified 10/22 will shade "1/2 @ 50 yds but goes out to "2 @ 10 yds. even on a fairly still day. The chances of making a one holer out of your 10/22 even at 50 yds are a little remote...if you want that kind of accuracy out of a 22; but an Anschutz bolt gun!

I have customized two rifles, a 10/22 and a 10/22 magnum. The 10/22 is a simple piece of machinery to work on and you should not need a gunsmith to do anything because of the variety of aftermarket parts.
I would advise not to buy the entire trigger group. I think they are an excellent piece of equipment, but they also cost more than the price of a new 10/22 rifle. All that is really needed is a hammer and sear package with shims for about fifty bucks. This gives a trigger pull of about 2.5 pounds and smoothes up the pull.
As far as barrels, the choice is up to you. A very accurate bull barrel can be obtained from a number of manufacters for about $100.00. These typically are guaranteed to do 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards. For some of the target barrels you can spend over $400.00. These shot a little better (maybe 7/16 inch @50 yards), but not for the difference in money. The .22LR is a limited performance cartridge.
On my .22 magnum, I converted to .17 HMR. I bought a custom target barrel from Jarvis for $200.00 that was stock contoured, meaning the original stock could be used. The barrel is promised to shoot 5/16 inch at 50 yards and it does. The stock trigger is supplemented with an aftermarket hammer and sear for a 2.5 pound pull. I also added an overpowered titanium extractor because of damn bottleneck case on the .17.
You can easily spend over a $1000.00 on a 10/22 with custom parts but don't do because you are limited by the ballistics on the 22LR. If I were you (and I'm not)I would buy an aftermarket .22 MacH II barrel that will soon be available for the 10/22. This combo will provide a 2000 fps, .17 grain bullet that has ballistics superior to the .22LR and will be more of a tack driver than any .22. It will hook right up to your current 10/22 with no problem.

I think HeavyIron is really giving you some good advice here! The 17 will likely outperform any 22 rimfire, if for no other reason than the shape of the bullet! Keep your costs down to a minimum...you can put silk on a sows ear ...as the old addage goes! I'm just agreeing that most of the super tweaks are not much better than the basic ones!

Hey thanks for all of the advice. I didn't think the .22 caliber could perform too well. All of the claims by manufacturers just made me curious. If I understand this correctly the 17 hmr is a necked down 22lr that I can fire from the 10/22 if I have the right barrell? I have heard some good things about the 17. I already have a 22 mag that I really enjoy shooting. If all that is involved is changing the barell this could work out great. Again thanks for all the help. 0 -
The .17 hmr is a necked down .22 mag. The new .17 mach 2 is a necked down .22lr.
