Surely you must be kidding. If you have a class III license or are a police dept, then you can get an M-16 in Cal, otherwise forget it.
Oh, there is another way. You can join the Marines and get one for free.
The .223 or 5.56mm round is a major overkill for squirrels. You would be better of with a .22lr, much cheaper to shoot and perfectly legal.

Lefty, this same guy posted here about three weeks ago saying he was from Canada and wanted to know if he could purchase an AR-15 here in California and was willing to "grease a few palms" to do it. He has clearly raised his sights quite a bit higher!

I've used my M16 in California on squirrels but not using direct shots. The method used is an old one called "barking". The M16 selector is set to the three round burst position and you aim at the bark just under the squirrel. The concussion kills the squirrel without damaging any meat. Sometimes the animal is just stunned in which case you can just bite just behind the head till you feel a crunch and no meat will be ruined.
Before the lightweight M16, I used a Thompson 1928 but set the selector on the semi auto position because the recoil of full auto would raise the barrel and sometimes hit the squirrel, spoiling the meat. I kept in on full auto while hunting to be ready for mountain lions. The detacheable buttstock was kept in a left side holster for long shots. Despite the weight difference the Thompson was a little quicker to line up without the buttstock. A four round burst with full metal jacket worked well on the lions.
The game wardens and park rangers were regular guys and didn't mind
the guns at all.0 -
I use a .600 Nitro Express to knock the tree down....then I just catch the squirrel as it falls.
When I get a bag full of them, I just hop in my M1A1 Abrams and drive home.0 -

I have an atomic powered tunnel boring machine that I was going to use to bore many tunnels under California till it sinks into the ocean and then just go around in my boat and use my M-60 on the squirrels as they try to swim for my new beachfront property in Arizona.
Is that legal ?

MY OHHH MY. This is a unique one.
I take a potato gun and shoot deer with peanut butter balls. The squirrels will kill the deer, then I kill the squirrels in defense of the deer. It's not much but it feeds the pigs.
