.223 semi auto/bolt suggestions.
Well here is the deal I decided today to sell the garand so I will have 800 or so dollars to waste on another rifle I have always wanted an AR of some type however the expense is a bit hight for a .223 especially considering the ban may lift and the prices may go way down...
Anyhow, I would like some suggestions on semi auto/bolt action rifles in .223 AR's INCLUDED.
the criteria
1. has to cost under 750 bucks including shipping and 20dollar transfer fee.
2. needs to have some type of iron sights "open/peep/blade etc."
3. there has to be a way to mount a scope.
4. they cannot under any condition look like something your great granddad would keep in his closet. "It has to look like its fun to shoot,no standard wood stocked regular hunting rifles" This will probably removed almost all the bolt actions but thats ok.
5. I am not paying for extreem accuracy I do not need to "shoot the wings off flies", accuracy is nice but as long as I can hit a squrrel at under 100 yards I am happy. [this was not a flame towards the below poster its just I should have been more specific in the first place, this will not be a competition gun in any respect]
6. Nothing semi auto with Ruger as the manufacturer
Oh ya no handguns, rifles only.
Whoever replies with good information and or links, will be added into a drawing I plan on doing soon, it will also have everyone else who has replied to one of my topics with good advice/information in the ask the experts forum. Unless they/you opt out of the drawing, which I will give you a chance to do before I hold it in the next few days.
Was looking at the auctions is anything that http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/ sells any good? They are selling quite a few really low priced Ar's on gunbroker.

There are .223 Remington cal. model 700 Classic bolt guns going for a bit less than that NIB on the auctionsite right now! ( You could also look for a sendero or similar synthetic stock gun that will look "cooler" than the wood stocked Classic but...well, I just don't like synthetic stocks so to each his own!) It will definately never be anybodies idea of a "sittin' in the back of the closet gun" in my view! They are really beaitiful and certainly very functional guns as well. You can spend around $600 on the gun, $150 on a nice scope and practice knocking the wings off flies at 100 yds! Any AR type that would be capable of that kind of accuracy ( and they are out there, believe you me!) with optics would be surely a lot more money!! 17 cals are a little limited but the 17 Remington cal is a real screamer...and just a LITTLE rough on barrels with imprudent shooting! The new 17 HMR is a nice round but I would think that a rimfire is not what you are likely looking for. Good luck on this one and I'm sad to hear that you will be parting with the Garand...a real piece of history there!

Have your considered the 7.62x39 round instead of the .223 or the .17? this round is fun to shoot, and very inexpensive. Try an SKS they are a blast, and for around 150.00 they are a steal. Very customizable but are the best as is. The yugos are my favorite and dirt cheap right now. Sure the AR's are alot of fun to shoot, but the last one I bought cost me around 1,200 dollars. I own 2 ak's, The reason I said .17 and .223 was I want a varment gun I believe both rounds are very apt for this purpose. as for the .17 I guess I should have been more specific didn't know there were vastly different .17s "The new 17 HMR is a nice round but I would think that a rimfire is not what you are likely looking for" actually its exactly what I was looking for I have only seen 1 .17 and it must have been the 17 HMR it sort of looked like a necked down .22mag
Otherwise I am totally lost on the whole .17 issue.0 -
the .17HMR is just that a 22mag necked down to .17 and loaded with a 17 gr bullet and they are a blast , since you don't want a run of the mill bolt [:(] maybe look at a Ruger 10-22mag with a thumbhole stock , these can be refitted with a barrel for the 17HMR , mags and everything else works just the way they are with the 17HMR , comes with sights and drilled and tapped for a scope mount base , should be able to sit one up the way you want for around 5 bills 0 -
If your varmint hunting is closer to 100 yards than 200 the 17HMR could be good and the Ruger would be a good choice. However, the ammo costs more than 223 and range/performance rest on the 223's side.
You can get some pretty darn nice 223 setups for under $800.
If you have any gunshows in your area hit them and that way you'll save the shipping to apply to gun and/or ammo. Also, depending on the laws in your part of the world there may be no transfer fee.
Don't misunderstand, I have a 17HMR and I really enjoy it, but it's not suited for larger varmints and is best when used at around 100 yds. or closer. So, if your only able to buy one rifle right now I think you would have more flexibility and therefore satisfaction from a 223.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
The 17 HMR is a fun cartridge but I feel is best kept inside 100 yds. The other 17 I mentioned is a long range proposition and is quite expensive to shoot. There are many other 17 centerfire rounds out there but most are wildcat, handload only propositions (and thus expensive as well!). The majority of 17 HMR's available right now are bolt guns but the advice given above I think would be a good thing to follow. The 10-22 Mag. rebarreled would likely be a ton of fun, but pretty limited in range as I said. 17 gr. bullets are a little hard to group with beyond that range! For around 5 bills you'ld have a great squirrel and ground hog gun, but nothing much bigger ethically. You could try a Ruger mini-14. They have many bell and whistle add ons but are known for not being god-awful accurate out of the box. In other words 223 or not for a bit over $400 out the door you're not really getting varmint type accuracy. You can invest a few hundred more and have it accurized and likely get the kind of accuracy you want but perhaps you've defeated the purpose. I still think for a relatively inexpensive varmint gun a synthetic stocked bolt gun would be your best bet bang for the buck wise but as you can see there are many options all over the board. I recently shot a friends Mini-14 that will produce a shade under "1 groups at 100 yds but he spent close to $800 having it smithed and putting optics on it. You get what you pay for I guess!

Olympic has an AR style rifle called the "Plinker" for around $650. Look in past forums as it has come up befor. Sound as if they function fine, don't know the accuracy. There are AK variants out there in .223, that with a reworked trigger are faily good, but don't know current price and, well, it is an AK. Bolt guns, I see there is a Savage 11GNS for about $370 on GB, is a limited edition rifle. Savage ain't the purtiest, but I have found few , if any, that will deny they are the best out of the box, money or otherwise. The 11GNS has the accutrigger and I may just have to hunt one down after looking at this. Also, wouldn't hurt to look at Howa, also aroungd the $375 TO 400 MARK. The Weatherby Vanguard is a Howa in disguise, as is the Smith and Wesson 1500, of which there are some still floating around. 0 -

You might consider the new Kel-tec rifle in .223. I have one and am very happy with it. I fired a five shot 2 1/4 inch group with 55 grain PMC ammo and a 2 3/4 power scope yesterday. I assume a 9X scope would do better. I paid $550 for mine, but suspect the price will go down as they are more available. I had trouble with the plastic 10 round factory mags that come with it, but have had no jams with the two colt m-16 mags I bought for it. I've fired about 500 rounds so far. It weighs five pounds empty and with a rigged sling on it, it is very nice to carry..... 0 -

Look at the CZ 527.I have one in 221,222,& 223. they all have set trigers & shoot under 1in.5 shoot groups,the 221 will put them all in one hole,even if that is not what you are looking for it dose not hert.The only thing I dont like is the safty works backwards and the finish scraches.My next one will be a 204 if they come out with one ,and that is the obvious next one.They come with or without open sights.synthetic,or lam. 22hornet-222-223-221-17rem.-762x39 & sell for about $500.00.But dont let me talk you out of an AR.if that is wtat you want. 0 -
AR lowers are $100 on ***********.com. FFl $20, shippping $10. Sales tax on all of that, $10. Model One Sales, online out of Illinois, has all the rest of the parts, minus a $20mag, for $420, shipping $10,no sales tax,cause all the rest of the parts can come direct to you. Assembling an AR lower is a pc of cake, requirig no special tools, but online diagrams help. Check out HomeGunsmithing Forums (Roderus Custom Gunworks) The Model 1 Sales upper comes already assembled, with the bolt headspaced to the barrel. Assembly takes about an hour. A vise is very helpful. $580. A Rock River lower is best, so you can used their $130 two stage, drop in trigger job, with no adjustments. $5 shipping. $715, and you can get it a pc at a time if you wish. I'd seriously look at the Ciener .22lr conversion unit, if I were you. It's a very quick changeover for the calibers, and then you are saving about a dime per shot, and being much quieter, with the option of shooting at indoor ranges. 0
