Alright, I have a rifle up for auction that is C&R Eligbile, that?s all I know (it?s also a rifle btw). I do not have a C&R or FFL. If the bidders that wins has a C&R do I just ship it to them without having to send the rifle through an FFL dealer or what? 0 -
no; try the Natl. Shooting Sports Foundation. They have a good Acq. and Disp book that ATF approved back in '68. I don't have a # ,but they are in Newtown CT. The books are 2-3 $ each , depending how many you get.

You are asking about the aquisition and diposition record or "bound book" which the BATFE mandates all collectors (as well as dealers who use a slightly different format) maintain. You will NOT receive such a book from the BATFE as these must either be purchased from commercial sources by you or you can make you own using the guide lines set out in Section 178.125, which should be prointed in the C&R list on page 8. If you don't have this C&R list then request one from the BATFE or simply go to their web site and I'll wager that you will find this information there by looking under licensed collector activities (or some such). I have no notion of how to post links or cut and paste and the C&R aquisition and disposition record headings are too long for me to be willing to type out in this post.

You should have rec'd (or will) a booklet "Federal Firearms Regulations Referance Guide". Mine has yellow covers. On page 58 you will find a guide for making your own records. I just bought an inexpensive bound book with blank lined pages and made my own "bound book" for my collection. Emery

RK Enterprises.....www.rkffl.com........805-687-1416....They have nicely formatted bound books for C&R and personal firearms not purchased with your C&R......Very helpful on the phone, and will help a newbie (like me) to understand what is needed. Sure, they're a business aiming at selling goods, but they are nice folks...They will try to talk you into the "C&R package deal"...and you know what...it makes things quite easy......my .02

You do not need to buy a log book. The entry form format should have come with the package of materials you received with your license from ATF.

Regardless of what level of FFL you have, it is the responsibility of the licensed party to create the line-by-line transaction list usually called a "bound book." It starts, of course, with a single page -- with lines drawn on it and headings at the top of each column -- as prescribed by the BATFE's illustration.
As has been said, the format for these pages is readily available from a number of sources, and you can choose to buy pre-printed forms or make your own pages from the BATFE's "template." You can make your own the old fashioned way with a pen and ruler or by creating a computer form in something like Excel -- as long as you do a couple of vital things -- print it out so that a hard copy exists, make your page look like the one in the ATFE's illustrations, and when you get more than one page, start putting them together in a binder and then a series of binders, as instructed.
The danger of the computer, of course, is keeping all the files there -- only on disk, and never printing them out -- and then having a hard drive crash. You WILL need a hard copy to comply with the law, and if your bound book is wiped out beyond recall, I hate to think... Unless you have 4473s or other invoices to re-create it from, you're at the BATFE's mercy. Not my favorite spot, thank you.
This requirement is designed to provide a reference log in which each and every gun is accounted for on a single line -- each gun from purchase to disposal, reading left to right. Each sheet of your bound book may list as many guns as there are rows on the page.
Some C&Rs and kitchen table FFLs may only ever have one sheet to their "bound book" until the day they give up the license and turn it all in to the BATFE. Obviously, dealers and distribs will develop a library of bound books over time.
But whether it's one page or hundreds, every FFL 01, FFL 02, and FFL 03 has to create and maintain this "bound book." A 3-ring binder of forms 4473 doesn't satisfy the requirement (C&Rs don't have any anyway -- a significant clue that that's not what a bound book contains). The bound book is a line item reference which you fill out yourself for every gun that was purchased under the aegis of your FFL 0x license. There may be something like 20-50 guns recorded per page, whatever number is convenient to you -- that's about the only leeway you have in the format, in fact -- how many rows per sheet.
This is an easy requirement to fulfill, if you start correctly from the beginning. It's catching up that would be a pain.
Sorry this is too long; I hope it is helpful to someone. I get the feeling there is more confusion about it than we hear about. If anyone feels I'm mistaken in any detail, feel free to comment, of course.
