Pony Express Revolvers

Back in the early '60s as a kid I worked for a direct descendant of one of the original founders of the Pony Express (Waddell F. Smith, descended from the Waddell of Russells, Major and Waddell), and (as I recall, but remember; I'm old now) in connection with an anniversary of the founding of the Pony Express, my employer arranged for Colt to manufacture 2,000 single-action revolvers, half in .22 caliber and half in .45. In each caliber, the revolvers were numbered 1 through 500 E. and 1 through 500 W. (for eastbound and westbound riders). My job was to pack 'em up and send 'em out as they were purchased.

The question (finally!): Have any of you seen or heard of these revolvers, and if so do you have any idea what one might be worth? Purely nostalgic questions on my part but would be appreciativeif you can satisfy my couriosity. Thanks!

  Working part-time for a gun shop that does a LOT of estate and consignment business I have seen quite a few of the various Colt Commemoratives for various events, states, personalities, etc. While I can't speak for the large bore .45's, we handled a lot of the little .22's, and I seem to recall them going out for between $295 and $695, depending on what person or event they commemorated. Some we had, from one large estate, had never even had the cylinder turned because they were gold-plated. I believe the majority of these little guns went like at $395 - $495. Colt made so many of these little mementos for various historical events that I don't believe they now have the value that they might have retained had they not ran off so many of them. A good investment for you might be to pick up a copy of Fjestaad's ( and I'll bet I botched that spelling ) "Blue Book of Gun Values" or some such similar volume.
