tang sight cleaning instructions
how do i take apart a lyman's tang sight to clean it? is there a trick to the swivel area? it has been in a fire and i'd like to get all the gunk out of the insides. thanks,dave

It depends on which specific variant of tang sight it is (e.g No. 1, 1A, 15, 103, etc.). However, I do not understand why you think there is gunk inside of it... there really is no "inside" to a Lyman tang sight (and I have taken apart many of them over the years to correct other peoples unwarranted tinkering). Generally, a soak in Kersosene or Kroil will clean up any stickiness that might have resulted from fire residue. Remove the elevation staff and then drop both pieces in a small container to soak for several hours, clean with something like WD-40, then apply a small amount of gun oil to the threaded elevation staff and to the pivot joint.

thanks for the reply. It has DA stamped on the underneath, and came off a winchester 1906. i soaked it in gas for a couple of days, and then used gun oil to loosen it up, and the oil and black soot keep coming out of the swivel area. i thought if i took it apart i could get the residue out. but i'll try your idea, and thanks a lot. 0 -

Just as a point of interest, that is not the correct tang sight for a Model 1906. The application code "DA" is for a Model 1892/1894. The proper application code for a Model 1906 (and 1890) is "WS".
