[soft point] or hollow point? For whitetail

I was under the impression soft point would be good but, my dad thought hollow points would do even better.

In .308 what would you use for under 150yards? I would like to be able to drop the deer with 1 shot.

I am possibly looking at buying a box of the hp PMC and some federal, however I would like your opinions first on what you would use soft point or hollow point and maybe some suggestions on bullet weight and style from what I have listed above.

    YOUR LIST INCLUDES SEVERAL GOOD CHOICES . AT 150 YDS. OR LESS THE 180GR. NOSLER PARTION IS HARD TO BEAT. SEE HOW YOUR RIFLE GROUPS THE N.P.'S . IF YOUR HAPPY WITH THE GROUPS GIVE'M A TRY NEXT SEASON .

    Any one will do,shot placement is all important! I favor the ballistic tips for their accuracy in my 30-06.Never much of a fan of holllow points for hunting big game.

    I shoot a 165 sierra boat tail, never had any problems with dropping deer.

    they should all do fine as long as you hit the animal where you are supposed to . i am not a fan of hollow points for big game , i think they are made for smaller game . in whta you have listed below i would use the 165gr trophy bonded bearclaw (great bullet) !! or they boat-tail soft point (165gr.) they should all do fine . i have GREAT GREAT expirience with the trophy bonded bearclaw .

    I have never used a HP for deer, white tail or mulies...in fact, I don't use HP's for anything other than 22 rimfire and handgun ammo. Shot placement will get you the one-shot kill a lot more than velocity and bullet configuration.

    I have always used a 30-06 with 150 gr. soft point ammo on all game deer size and under. And 180 gr. soft point ammo for elk.

    I agree with the other guys about Hollow points being more of a varmint bullet, with one exception....Barnes X hollow points are an excellent bullet on game. They retain 90% or more of their bullet weight and deliver a lot of shock. With their better retained energy you can use a lighter bullet than you normally would, if you can find them get 150 grain Barnes X. You also didn't mention what part of the country you are in and how big those whitetails get! Any of the popular soft point bullets in 150, 165, or 180 grain should do the trick. If you want them to drop like the rug was pulled out from under them you need to head, neck, or spine shoot them, or drill them through both shoulders. However I don't like the shoulder shot as it ruins a lot of meat. Normally on deer of all kinds I shoot them in the ribs just behind the shoulder and a little lower than shoulder and it takes out their lungs, they almost never drop instantly but they are just as dead and only go a few yards. Never lost one yet.

    Thanks guys, that definetly widdled down the list a bit. I didn't want to break the bank buying diff ammo already spent a good 50 bucks on different kinds for the .308

    When I Doe hunt I use PMC 150gr SPBT in my 308win but here in East Texas are deer are the size of german shepards[:p].

    :) ours are a bit bigger :) also I would like more power just incase I have to defend myself against a blackbear.

    Or one of the 150gr PMC the 180 SPBT didn't kick bad though so now I just need to see how it groups and holds up from 50-200 yards, I would like to be able to hit the target from between 50-200 without having to compensate a ton.

    I don't think it will be a problem but some of the rounds I have bought in the 147-150gr area were a little un predictable going to 200 from a zeroed 100, especialy if there was any wind.
