I really love the look of this, reminds me a lot of my garand. I was wondering if this is a good price and if its a good gun.

Made like a Swiss watch. Interesting design and functions well. Extra mags are somewhat expensive (not that you really need one) and ammo can be difficult to find in small (and large) shops.
The price listed is a giveaway.

This is yet another surplus rifle which used to sell for hundreds of dollars when you could find an example (which was not very often) and can be had for a fraction of its previous collector price. Well made and solid as any military rifle ever produced, everyone should have one at these give away prices. Ammunition is now available and although still a bit pricey, it is well under the commercial price for Norma which used to be the only game in town at about a buck each shot. All Swiss service ammunition was loaded with non corrosive primers since shortly after WWI so most of these rifles will have their original barrels and most will still be in good condition. Wear and tear on the wood seems to be the biggest issue with these rifles and it might be a good idea to ask for a hand selection if you cannot actually make your own choice from among several.

Got mine from SOG, and sure, the stock is a LITTLE rough...As Mark says, handpick may get you a better one (or not)....All my numbers match, even the stock!....Those Swiss (of which I am part) really took good care of these. The straight pull bolt takes some getting used to and the take down procedure can be daunting until you know the correct order, but by all means, grab one of these....[^]

Redice: These are really fine rifles and most if not all are very accurate. The Swiss take particular pride in producing unique and sometimes odd (to western/American tastes)longarms and this design is one that has evolved from an original design that started before the turn of the last century...I think 1889. The original rofles started with a much longer reciever and barrel and ditilled to the last and best iteration which is the K31 you are contemplating buying. The barrels are almost always in very good shape at least as the Swiss were some of the earliest to go to non-corrosive primers and primers.
Some of the Swiss military ammo is indeed truely excellent in quality but has one drawback in that it is Berdan primed and non-reloadable. I bought mine 2 years ago when the price for VG+ conditon fell to $119 from SOG and I felt they would go no lower. It is all matching numbers and has 95%+ blueing with a bore that rates at least a 9. I bought some of the FNM (at $8 a box) Portugese made ammo that was boxer primed(also have 3 unopened boxes of Norma I bought for$10 a box...no, I won't sell it!! LOL) and spent $25 on a set of Lee RGB dies and commenced to start experimenting with loads. I now have a $120 gun that will shoot honest "1 1/2 inch groups with the open sights provided. It is without doubt one of my favorite Mil. Surp. guns and with the exception of the weird (but aclimatable) ergonomics and swinging barn door trigger (that is VERY crisp and light when taken up)is a real pleasure to shoot. If you reload, this is one hell of a gun to play with! The straight pull bolt is really smooth and will give you the opportunity to try some interesting things impossible with any other bolt gun. With the exception of the Canadian Ross, the Austrian M-90/95/31 and the Blaser rifles (which is such an incredible gun I only put it in here for comparisons sake...costs around $5000) you won't likely have a chance to play with anything like it. If you reload, follow some sage advice and do not surpass indicated max loads. This is a partially unsupported case head. Overloading it can cause severe damage to both rifle AND shooter!
To sum up, I feel the G3 is a really neat gun, but the K-31 is neat and very, very interesting with a historical place already established in history. The G3 will someday be seen as the progenitor of a legendary series of pieces of military hardware but the one you buy will very likely NOT be a military weapon that was issued and used in the form you buy it; the K-31 you buy will have been issued, carried and shot and will also very likely be in great condition. They were shot, but never in anger! Nobody wants to invade the Swiss, for fairly obvious reasons! Good luck rooting them out of those mountains! Go for it...you will not be unhappy!

I'VE HAD SEVERAL OF THESE IN THE SHOP OVER THE PAST 4 MONTHS AND THEY ARE A BARGIN, STOCKS CAN BE DINGED UP BUT THE METAL IS USUALY 50/80% WITH EXC. BORES. AIM WAS OUT OF THEM TWO WEEKS AGO BUT SOG STILL HAD THEM AT ABOUT $80 +S/H. TRIGGER PULLS ON ALL HAVE BEEN ABOUT 2 LBS. AFTER TAKE-UP. 0
