my Makarov destroyed---any clues why?

Purely speculation here, but a double charge of powder could split the barrel/chamber which in turn would swell and lock it onto the slide. Contact Hornady with the lot number of the ammo, they will want to here about it for certain, and may want to see your gun.

Hello you did not state if FACTORY loads or RELOADS if these were your reloads . you just learned the pitfalls of not paying attention to details in your loading .If factory loads save box and all loaded rounds contact loader but DON"T send them all of the rest of unfired ones. The pistol is toast at least you did not get hurt.

As I see it, Hornady uses a powder that nearly fills the case so a double charge is a somewhat less that guaranteed cause. I've disassembled a few of the Hornady factory rounds (I am assuming these are what you are using)in order to see what their magic load was and am pretty sure of whence I speak here. Are you sure the spent case is not jamming up the works? Another cause could be the barrel trunion having worked itsef loose and impeded the traverse of the slide. These are after all fixed barrel, blowback pinned barrels! I find this a little odd as much of the Norinco ball ammo I've fired has much higher felt recoil than the Hornady XTP's (of which I am generally very fond by the way!)I've fired over the years through my East German gun. Can you still operate the safety? It could also be that the safety cross bar has snapped and jammed up the works as well. Post back, let us know what you discover!

The ammo was hornady factory fresh hollow point. No reloads. I worked this afternoon trying to get the slide to come off the gun but no luck, it is like it is welded onto the gun. The bullet casing is still in the gun barrel but seems to be loose or at least not stuck hard. I just don't think the ammo is at fault, the safety or hammer coming loose and catching the slide and thus wedging the slide as the gun fired seems the most likely cause. If I find anything else out I'll post it. My gun is certainly history now.......but I like Makarovs and am ordering a new one Monday. What would I do with all my ammo if I didn't get another one?

You mention that your pistol has been shot alot.

I recently bought a used 1911 and was having a similar problem. After I finally got the thing disassymbled I inspected the frame and barrel for excess wear. I replaced the barrel with a slightly used one from Gunparts. Works good now.

Well, the only way I could get this gun apart would be with a hacksaw or a welding torch. The slide is stuck so hard to the frame it will not budge at all. And in my trying to get it apart I'm sure I have damaged it, which probably doesn't matter since it was trashed since that one shot that locked the slide to the gun frame.

Just had another thought on this one. Since there is an integralbushing hole in the nose of the slide, and the Mak has a barel wrapping recoil spring, what about the possibility of the end of the spring getting jammed between the end of the barrel and the nose of the slide? That WOULD make for a pretty secure lock down! Also, if the barel/chamber were split, wouldn't you see it through the ejection port? Just a few thoughts....good luck~

Hey, thanks for all the advice and suggestions. I'll take a look at some ofthe things you said to try. I would like to get the gun apart just for the parts.

Try clamping the frame in a vise, then use a sturdy rod up the bore, and tap it, lightly at first, with a hammer.
