What Exactly Is Mil-Spec????
Seeing as how we got off my topic of lowering an ejection port, I guess we can go to the world of Mil-Spec shooting. And seeing as how I have no idea what that is, can any of you guys that shoot in those competitions explain to me what we are talking about?
I would love to branch off from trap shooting, into another shooting sport, but in my area, we are limited to trap, and rifle shooting at two different clubs. Which is not bad, just somewhat constrained.

Mil-Spec is short for Military Specifications. In other words, the military decides what it needs, what it supposed to do, and how long it supposed to do it. These are the specifications.
To sell something to the military, a product must meet this criteria.
No big mystery. In most ads, it adds an aura of precision (which it must be).
Men have passed on...knowledge...yet in politcs, statecraft, and social relationships we continue to repeat old mistakes.

Mil Spec and National Match are widely used terms today. I take both claims with a grain of salt.
Mil Spec means that the item was made to US Govt drawings and material specifications. Materials, heat treatment and dimensions are within US Military specifications. Additionally, parts like 1911 frames barrels and slides are forged with specific reduction ratios as required by Govt mfg process sheets, not cast or machined from bar stock. Finally, unless it carries an acceptance proofmark it aint acceptable by the Govt. Plenty of materiel is made by Govt subcontractors that doesnt meet one spec or another and is rejected by Govt Inspectors. So the proof mark
is the qualifier not the words of the manufacturer.
National Match today is a marketing term.0 -

Springfield Armory's "Mil Spec" 45ACP Semi-auto (5" bbl 1911) was recently available for just over $400, NIB, with a lifetime guarentee.

As has already been explained, Mil-Spec is short for military specification or the standard that the military demands in any of its equipment.
Don't be too excited about it, however, remember military equipment is built by the lowest bidder.0 -
As I heard it, the weapon doesn't need to be built by military specifications or tollerances - but can be subjected to a Mil-Spec test. (At least that's how it works in Denmark)
The new Benelli's, some older variants of Mossberg and some handguns were subjected to a test.
I know that one Benelli Nova pumpgun should be able to make 5000 shots without cleaning, while being clogged up with dust, water, mud, snow and ice - before being accepted as a shotgun in active duty.
Saw some pics, where they packed snow in the ejectionport (tests are always with closed bolt, as I heard it) - let it lay in the sun on the snow for some time, letting snow, sand, dust enter whereever it could.

Hello one of the points you raised was about MATCHES. N.R.A. run BULLS-EYE matches this is one handed shooting one third slow fire one third timed fire and one third rapid fire. It is fired with 3 pistols 22, Center Fire & 45ACP . C.M.P. runs matches that started as MIL SPEC matches with every body issured the same "LOT" of ammo and was shot with 45 ACP on colt 1911 type pistols Then things started to get clouded and they allowed the *(^% 9mm then they allowed any factory load 230 grain HARD BALL so one of the service teams had a factory load light loads to cut down on recoil . so C.M.P. now lets you shoot reloads . This change in rules is what I and BOBSKI was wineing about. I have been to Perry 32 years and at the rate of tooting my own horn I am 9 times PRESIDENT 100 and 2 time root medal I dont like the new rules. 0 -
Thanks PerryShooter, you finally answered my question, "What is a Mil-Spec shooting match"? I already knew what mil-spec stood for concerning the military, having served 15 months in Viet Nam, but that has nothing to do with Mil-Spec shooting matches!
