Thompson Submachine Gun Model 1921
My husband inherited a Thompson submachine gun model dated 1921. It is also marked Tokyo Japan. He says that it is the real thing but one part was never added so you are not able to fire it,so it was mainly for display. We just wanted to know if anyone would have anymore information on this or what it may be worth. It is in beautiful condition. It has a round clip, is that what you call it? A gun like the gangsters used. Thank you Allison

You may be sitting on $10,000 plus, up to around $30,000!

First I would not sell it for any amount of $, until you know exactly what you have.
You need to have it looked at by what is called a "Class 3 dealer", who deals and is registered by the Federal goverment in sells & repairs of restricted weapons such as machineguns.
I only found one "Class 3" dealer is Wis.

The main thing is, are there any papers or documentation with the gun from the BATF or military? These papers are worth more than their weight in diamonds!
If the machinegun has been modified not to fire it maybe what is called a "Dewat". Meaning that it was imported into the US then de-militarized so as not to fire.
A "Dewat" machinegun WITH the paperwork, can be re-activated into a full blown machinegun. Worth in the neighorhood of $10,000 to $30,000!!!! DEPENDING on the paperwork & the actual model of gun.
Best thing to do is to get a hold of a class 3 dealer and get it appriased!
WATCH OUT!, some class 3 dealers will be all over it trying to buy it for peanuts!
DO NOT SELL, until you know for sure what it is worth..

Don't get your hopes up; I think DJ nailed it --- it's a replica!
The Japs are phobic about guns. They don't allow private citizens to own them. However, this has produced a fascination with them, especially US guns seen in the movies. They now have a well-developed industry to produce high quality replicas, some of which sell for several hundred dollars. Several importers have brought some into this country, but there is not a lot of interest in them.

If it says MGC on it it probably is a full auto blank gun (takes special reloadable ammo that is hard to find) The guns have some value especially if you have the box and acc. A couple of pics would really help. Since you said it was made in Japan it could be any number of well made replicas in the $100 to $500 range, but it will not be a "real" Tommy gun in the 20K range[:(]. Let us know any additional info you can find.

to WAPO3030 thanks for the pictures. It does not have the long rectangular clip but it has a round clip. It looks like the type of gun the gangsters used. Sorry for my lack of knowledge! Allison

As I said before you probably need to take it to a dealer but as stated above DO NOT SELL UNTIL YOU ARE SURE OF WHAT YOU HAVE. Pictures would be of BIG help, again I think it's a repro I could be wrong keep your fingers crossed and look for the documentation that might have come with it.
