YES IT HAS A V IN THE SERIAL # , TOLD THIS WAS A POLICE OR MILATARY, ERA MID 1940S ???? 0 -
Smith & Wesson rifles were manufactured by both Husqvarna of Sweden and Howa of Japan.
They date from the late 60's to the mid 80's.
The quality of both the above manufacturers product is excellent.

S&W has ventured into "sporting" rifles a couple times.
1969-72 Mfg. by Husqvarna; Modela A,B,C,D and E all bolt action all could be obtained in .243 In top condition prices range from $325 to $425
1981-85 Mfg. by Howa, again bolt action and 243 chambering was available in the 1500 Std. and Mountaineer, 1600 Delux and the 1700LS Classic Hunter. In top condition prices range from $300 to $375.

S&W used to own what became Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in the 1850's. This was one of the first levergun manufacturers. Volcanic later became New Haven Arms Company, which then became Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

The .243 cartridge was first marketed by Winchester in 1954.0 -
