double barrels

Can anyone tell me about those Chinese replica double barrels? I have seen them for 199.99 new. I know the quality can't be as good as real shotguns (Rem, Moss, Win, Beretta etc). But are they worth the price? Any info would be appreciated.

    I'm looking for bargins, mostly single shot breech guns. I've found thru the "school of hard knocks" that a Stevens "Dread Naught" wasn't such a great find. I've also found that a Winchester model 37 in 410 was a good find (had red letters). But I'm not so sure what names to be looking for in the older double barrels. Could aanyone maybe give me a top five or so?

    Flayderman in his basic reference text "Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms" has a chapter devoted to American Shotguns.

    I would recommend that you obtain a copy.

    Add LeFever and L.C. Smith to the list of numerous Old American Doubles.And of course the Winchester 21. Price range is very broad with models and condition.

    I was meaning double barrels. In my ignorance, I referd to them as single shots. Breech loaders may have been a better term. Singles are what I'm familiar with and doubles seem like the next logical step in my hobby.

    1. Winchester Model 21 or the newer Model 23
    2. Colt Model 1883 Hammerless or Model 1878 Hammer guns
    3. Parker Bros.
    4. Ithaca (several different models)
    5. L.C. Smith (it really hurts me to have to include these, so don't tell Nord[}:)][:D])

    However, based on your former interests, the above listed scatterguns are all probably out of your price range... especially if you are used to buying Stevens single barrel single shots. So, if your budget doesn't allow those on the above list, try these...

    1. Winchester Model 24
    2. Crescent made doubles
    3. Stevens 311
    4. Harrington & Richards (H&R)
    5. Iver Johnson

    For American guns top of the line would be(In order of price not nessasarily quality)

    Parker
    Fox
    Winchester
    L.C. Smith
    Baker
    Ithaca
    LeFever
    Remington

    Of course prices would depend on grade. Personally even though I've owned a bunch of boxlock Ithaca's, I prefer sidelock guns. Currently there are a pair of L.C. Smiths residing in my safe. Someday I'd like to put a nice Baker in there to keep them company. L.C.Smith, Ithaca, LeFever and Baker all have intertwined histories. If you're looking for an inexpensive shooter, Ithaca and LeFever field grades can still be picked up at fairly reasonable prices.
