detachable mag on yugo sks

i have converted to detachable mags for my sks. still has most original yugo parts, i have removed the grenade launcher and replaced it with a compensator. the bayonet is still on the gun. the mags are preban made in the usa. should i have any legal concerns with this arrangement?

    I believe you have to weld the compensator so that it is permanent and cannot be threaded off.

    Anyone answering, please clear this up for a couple of us.

    Removing the bayonet does not count unless you grind off the lug.
    Is that correct ? , if not there is one point to get easily.

    The relevant regs of the Gun Control Act of 1968 can be found in Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide (ATF P5300.4) page 7:

    [A semiautomatic assault weapon is] "(B) a semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least 2 of -
    (i) a folding or telescoping stock;
    (ii) a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;
    (iii) a bayonet mount;
    (iv) a flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; and
    (v) a grenade launcher;"

    Your SKS has the detachable mag & the bayonet mount; if I were a high priced lawyer I would argue in court that the barrel threads are for attaching a grenade launcher, not a flash suppressor. Of course, at that point I would already be well into your $10,000 retainer.

    Think about it: the last thing in the world that you want to do is get into a disagreement with the fellows with the bulges in the cheap suits. Their motto is: "Arrest now, litigate later."

    My advice is to throw away that junk detachable mag, which doesn't work anyway, & reinstall the original fixed mag. Then, you won't need to worry about it.

    You can buy a 20rd non-detachable magazine if your looking for higher capacity.

    Well, Lets see here , the SKS and this issue is a common question , about the legalities ??? it depends on who you ask and the day of the week ...I have kept mine (SKS) simple : it is in org. cond. .....
    and besides , we have "smithed" on about azillion of these ( detachable mags!) and only about one or two have ever worked worth a hoot !!!! its just not worth the trouble ...The SKS is a great gun as it is , if you want an "AK" , then buy one .......Good Luck !!!

    The detachable mags that I have work surprisingly well... I also have an original yugo that I would never dream of modifying in any way. I think they shoot very well and are alot of fun as is. However, as a fan of the SKS, I also like to see what combinations are possible while still being legal messing around with different attachments and modifications can be alot of fun, all the while having my other original one which is my favorite. Thanks for all the feedback. But noone was able to truly answer my question with absolute certainty so i think a small bead of weld around the base of the compensator will have to do. It will get rid of the threaded barrel and the grenade launcher. that will leave only the bayonet mount and should take care of it. By the way these mags are from rifletech.com and work very very well, but pricy, eh thats what hobbies are for right? (spending your money before your wife can.)[^]
