How bad am I?
I shoot corrosive ammo in my stainless mini-30 frequently. I only clean the gun a couple of times a year. Is that bad?

Yes, BAD BAD, if you shoot corr ammo, you should clean it after each use. I would suggest GI bore cleaner, and lots of it.
Even though your mini is stainless, and more resistent than carbon steel, it is still affected by corr ammo. You could end up with some serious pitting in the bore and gas system if you let it go.
Wolf makes their 7.62x39 non-corr, and it is cheap, good shooting ammo. I would switch to it if you want to let your rifle sit for a few weeks after shooting.

Stainless should properly be labeled "stain resistant steel" because it will rust and pit, it just takes longer. 0 -

Where do you get corrosive ammo and how much does it cost? Non-corrosive is so cheap, why do what you're doing?0 -
I shot Norinco non corrosive 7.62x39 and .223 in three rifled and put them in a closet for two weeks when we went on vacation.
Guess what I found in the bore of each chrome lined barrel?
RUST.
They scrubbed clean so you'd never know it. Should have known better because chrome plate is porous.

I assume it's corrosive cause it's berden(sp?) primed mil-surplus.
I bought a whole load of it a few years ago. It might not be though, cause I've never found any rust, it just get's real dirty. Thanks for the scolding, I'll change my ways.

Berdan (General Hiram Berdan, US Union army) primed does not necessarly mean corrosive, it is simply the way the anvil is constructed (Berdan the anvil is part of the case, Boxer the anvil is part of the primer).
What is (or can be) corrosive is the chemical compound used in the primer itself.
Knowing when/where it was produced (from the headstamp) is a much better indication of the corrosive properties than the style of primer.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

There was a load of 7.62x39 East German corrosive around several years ago. I haven't seen any in a while, but I would guess there is plenty of corrosive ammo still left from the old communist block countries.
As to cleaning your rifle, definitely YES! Clean it throughly after shooting corrosive ammo. The corrosive is found in the primer of these cartridges in the form of lead or mercury fulminate (there are many others as well). What actually happens is after firing a corroisive cartridge a salt compound is created and distributed throughout your firearm. After brief exposure to humidity, corrosion begins in your barrel. Everyone who has lived in the North or Midwest has probably observed the effects of road salt on their vehicle. Corrosive ammo does the same thing to your barrel.
To clean the barrel, use lots of soap and hot water to dissolve the salt and flush it from the firearm. Normal cleaning immediately after should prevent rust.0 -
I found some of that 7.62x39 corrosive East German ammo in a local shop here in CT. It smelled like cat piss while we were shooting it. Wolf was having trouble getting their ammo here in bulk for a couple of months so i bought 500 rounds of this east german crap, and man did it ever make a mess. We cleaned our SKS's immediately after shooting, and had no problem. But we sure as hell were not gonna leave it in there to destroy our guns, and either should you. These guys were right, Wolf ammo is cheap and works very well, and is non corrosive, try that it goes for anywhere from 87.00 to 100.00 per case of 1,000 rounds. You cant beat that. 0
