The corrosive compound is a salt from the primer. Hot water (soap is optional) followed by a regular solvent cleaning.
You will hear some people recogmend "Windex w/Ammonia", it's still the water that is doing the number on the primer salts, the small amount of ammonia will help with any copper residue but it dosn't do anything for the corrosives.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

I agree completely with Tailgunner on this one. All the "secret Formulas" are useless...hot, mildly soady water and then a regular solvent cleaning. I am fond of going to the garage and putting about 2 inches of the aforementioned in a plastic bucet. Place the muzzle of the rifle in the water and using a fairly tight brush, clean from the breech end. The action will have a slight suction effect on the bore and bring the water up to you. Try not to get too aggressive this way as you dont want water running down the inside ofthe action under the wood, but it works very well as you will see by the black water left over!

You will notice that a lot of older Mil. Surp rifles have corroded breech faces. This is caused by the corrosive salts that leech out like Tailgunner mentioned. Clean that area very well everytime with a bronze phosphor brush and every coouple of trips to the range, use the instructions you will find on www.surplusrifle.com to detail strip the bolt and clean inside.

Ring around the primer, pitting on the bolt face is from gas leakage around the primer. If you use corrosive ammo in any firearm, the boltface needs to be cleaned regularly . A pipe cleaner can be used on the firing pin hole and the firing pin tip should also be cleaned. 0
