What to look for on an M1 to determine value.

I'm picking up an M1 Garand I inherited next week and am not sure what to look for to determine value. The only thing I know at this point is that is a Springfield Armory one with a serial number in the 900 thousands.I become confused looking at the different ones listed. Thanks, as always,experts!

    One of the first things to look for is the marking in the barrel channel. When you open the action on an M1 service rifle you will see a gap between the stock and the handgaurd on the rifle's right hand side, so look in this channel for a series of numbers and a date. In your case you will want the barrel to be stamped no later then 12-42 (December 1942). If the barrel is dated much later than this (like years later) your hopes and dreams of a collector grade (and valuable) M1 are over before you even got started. Get a hold of the rifle and write down every number, stamping, and marking which you can see on each part as well as those on the left hand side of the stock (if any) and front of the grip. Take the rifle down into as many individual parts as possible as most of the major components will be marked.
