Need info and value on 03-A3?

I just traded for a model 03-A3 that has U.S., Smith-Corona on it and the serial number 3655401. It is on a sporter stock, a bad looking stock at that. Has the peep rear sight and military front site. Any idea as to when it was made and what it is worth? Is a Smith-Corona made one collectable? Where can I find an original complete military stock? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Over 234,000 Smith-Corona's, were made during the war. Yours dates out to 1943.

    Finding good (or really good) wood for military service rifles is problematic at best and often the cost of an original stock excedes the value of the rifle itself. I know that there are aftermarket stocks being produced by various firms for both the M1903/03A3 as well as the M1 rifle and you might do better with one of these than a high dollar original. If you are looking for the correct wood then a stock for your vintage rifle should be marked with an FJA cartouche as well as the ordnace "wheel". Gun shows, auctions/web sites, and surplus rifle parts suppliers are your best hope but don't be shocked at the prices you see for what you would consider to be a "good" looking piece of wood.

    Thanks Mark and rufe-snow. I took it apart after posting this and someone took some good deal of time with this sporter stock. It is glass bedded but the wood in the forearm area is just too wide for my tastes. I might leave the sporter stock on it, which by the way is a bueatiful piece of walnut, but I might have the forearm area taken down a bit. It has a high cheek area like European rifles. What is a rough ball park value with sporter stock on it. I might have gotten took but I have $155 dollars in it. Bore is excellent and finish is great. I checked all parts out real well and as far as fit, looks, and wear it is in great condition just on a sproter stock! Again thanks for the info.

    It is certainly worth what you have in it... personally if hte metal isn't chopped, I would restore it. But either way, still a nice gun.
