45 ball ammo

Ther is a dealer that will sell me a can of 600 45 ball full metal jacket ammo, non-corrosive for 68.00. Is it worth it, and will the ammo function the way it should?? It is from the WWII era.

    You haven't bought it already??? That's beyond a great price...even if it isn't WWII ammo. I paid over $270 for a can of 1000 rounds of Match 230 grain Ball ammo. If you don't want it I'm sure there are more than a few guys who would jump on it. Beach

    Im not sure how it will work and the can is sealed and I dont think he will let me open it to try it. Is it normal to ask?? Also, I live in Illinois and you are not permited to recieve ammo by mail unless you have an ffl do do the fact that we must show our firearms Id card for every purchase.

    For some reason I missed that it wasn't match ammo. I also missed that there were only 600 rounds in the can. If it's a full can and it hasn't been opened then I'd say at $6.80 per 100 rounds that it's still a good deal. I would think that it must have at least some collector value. It is american ammo isn't it? Beach

    gun_runner, all my references are packed, but I'm virtually certain all WW2 GI ball ammo was corrosive - and commercial production (except for some very specialized exceptions) was nonexistent. How about some specs from the ammo can? One thing which jumps out - given that he won't allow you to inspect the ammo and the NC claim, my BS sensor is up and running [;)] - is that this may be some of the *steel* cased alternative ammo from the mid-war years. Much of this has come to the market recently. There was a slew of this made, but none was shipped overseas, rather it was held in reserve, where it filtered out to NG / Reserve units over time and was typically put on the back shelves in the armories - from which it is now being / been removed. Look at the arsenal & year. If the word "Evansville" or initials "EC" or "ECS" appear on the can along with a 1942-3-4 date, this is almost certainly steel cased corrosive primed ammo. It's still a good deal at $5.67 a box (hey, beach, good thing you don't teach math!! [}:)][;)]), but no awesome bargain. If the mfg is a different arsenal, there's a 99.9% probability will be brass cased . . . but it still will be corrosive. If you don't mind doing a real good job on the cleaning immediately after shooting it - using GI bore cleaner (or the soap & water routine, in a tip of the hat to ISP), then go for it. OTOH, if you plan to shoot a few rounds here and there, I'd pay a few bucks more and buy some newer, NC, ammo which won't require the detailed cleaning. I suspect the dealer is attempting to pull a fast one here. JMHO.

    P.S. I'd recommend you take Iconoclasts advice on this one....he's forgotten more about ammo than most of us learn in a lifetime!!! Beach

    beach...it happens more often now that we are retired. [:(] 6.80 a box plus s&h brings it up to still under 10.00 per box. 10.00 for 230 lead rn reloads is the norm around here. hey...youre still getting an ammo can too. sure...go for it and clean your gun real good every time. or sell it for 10.00 a box at a gun show to ww2 collectors who dont care if it fires or not!

    Hello, When you say can do you mean a 50 cal can that opens or a Spam can. The Spam cans is collected by people who do displays. If a Spam Can no one is going to let you open it unless you buy it. We have problems at the gun shows with people trying to see whats inside Spam Cans and tape the keys so they can't be opened.

    Old Ammo, have lots always looking for more.

    If it is steel case don't shoot it for some reason the bullet reacts with steel case and pressure goes all over the place.It also breaks extractors. There is some collector interest in steel case you might be able to sell at gun show and buy new ammo plus have money left over.

    ahhh spam cans! whew! the stuff is worth more as a collection piece than it is for shooting. man...i'd buy em and sell em to make a profit and then use the profit to buy good shooting ammo!
