Spencer Gun Co.

I was given a single shot shotgun that belonged to my grandfather. I would like to know the date of the gun. I has a real clear serial number on it. Where do i find this info.     I have a 12 ga SxS shotgun with 18 1/2 inch barrels. On the side it is marked Spencer Gun Co. on the top between the barrels is `New American Hamerless' Can anyone tell me where or who made the shotgun and maybe a value the inside of the barrels has some pitting also I have been using it for CAS.

    Sadly this is not one ot THE Spencers. Instead I believe that it was a contract firearm made by the Cresent Firearms Co., branded as Spencer and produced around the turn of the century. None of these are worth more than $200, even if in excellent condition. Your hammerless example is worth a bit more than the hammer guns, but with pitting and the fact that I don't think an 18-1/2" version was ever produced (it has probably been cut down along the way), its value is limited to what use it has as a shooter. I hope that you example has the steel barrels rather than the damascus type since you appear to be actually shooting it.

    i hope you are using very light loads, PYRODEX of another BLACK POWDER equiv...(if its damascus BBL`d)

    if you are using modern ammo with smokeless powder in damascus BBL`s you are taking your life into your hands.

    when a damascus BBL goes, it does not simply bulge, or split, it turns into chunks of slinky like shrapnel that will kill or injure anyone near you.

    if you must have the look of damascus in a CAS / SASS event, have the gun sleeved to the next smaller gauge.

    you may shoot the gun with no problem for years, or you may blow it up sooner with no warning. modern ammo and smokless powder should never be mixed with damascus steel, and even handloaded paper hull light loaded with an EQUIV powder is still a high risk in an unsleeved BBL set.

    many of these guns are of dubious origin, quality, and design. many have not been cared for correctly or maintained properly.

    I purchased the shotgun in the early 70's and have had it checked by 2 gunsmiths and it does have steel barrels and light loads are used.

    we do not mean to pick on you, we just want you to be safe. obviously you have taken steps to ensure the gun is OK. with the recent onset in popularity in CAS / SASS many novice shooters simply do not know what is safe, or think to have pieces checked out.


    while your piece on the normal "market" in local shops may not command a high value, among SASS / CAS shooters it would perhaps command a premium. the average hunter / shooter / enthusiest / collector might not be interested, but your fellow competitors would be. good luck. best regards, mike.
