high-efficiency rifle powder burn rates
Which FACTORY rifle rounds/loads are efficient in that they burn 100% or very close to that of their powder charge within the first few/several inches of barrel, and thus develop most of their velocity early?
Related to that, which of these can be fired from the TC Encore/Contenders with 10", 12", or 14" barrels and NOT lose much velocity?
I hear the .308 is very good i this regard. Is that true? are there others?

Most factory Rifle ammo is loaded with slowest powder that will not be a compressed load because that will give highest VOL.You can't have it both ways. To load in shorter barrels a cartridge that was designed as a rifle cartridge you will have to reload yourself or go to a custom loader. 0 -
You may try reading up on some of the old P.O.Ackley information. Some of Ackleys work was just what you are asking about, trying to figure out the most efficient use of powder for a given caliber. For instance he considered the .257 Roberts a better cartridge than the 25-06, and the .257 Ackley improved as the very best .25 cal. because it gave the most velocity for the amount of powder used in standard length barrels, he considered the 25-06 wasteful in this sense as it only gave up a little more velocity for a lot more powder. You may find his work interesting reading, somewhat dated but still pertinent. 0 -
Alot of the new ultra short cartridges are very good in this respect. Their fat short little case bodies using fast powders tend to use alot of their powder charge up quickly and efficently. The 308 is a lot more efficient than its' parent 30-06 and if you compare them side by side you will see the difference in case length makes the 308 look short and fat by comparison. I guess I would concentrate on the fstest powders available/recommended for the desired bullet weight in the caliber you choose. J.D. Jones has also done some remarkable work at SSK Industries using short fat cartridges that move a really big bullet at around 1040 fps. This is neat stuff to study as since the bullet doesn't go through the soundbarrier on the way up and down (and a few other factors too) it retains almost as much energy at 300 yds as it leaves the muzzle with. A round like the 308, efficient as it is, moving at over 3000 fps will have a tendency to lose a lot of energy by the time it gets out that far and prove itself to be much less efficient than J.D.'s Whisper cartridges are at the same down range measure. Alot of his work was done with the T/C's specifically in mind. Check out Cartridges of the World for a nice thumbnail view of his work...it's a real eye-opener!

John Barsness put out an article a few years back stating that even the 30-378 wthby mag burns it's powder charge within the first 6 inches of barrel. If you place a white sheet on the ground in front of the barrel,..and fire a round loaded with even the slowest powder,..I doubt you will see any unburned powder grains on the sheet. Increasing neck tension will help to burn the slower powders more efficiently as will going to sharper shoulder angles (P.O. Ackley's 40 degree shoulder works very well) Don't sweat short barrels and burn rates,..just find a powder producing the speed you want,..load it,..and see if you can get it to be accurate for your purposes.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
