Shot gun help
i just inheritated a side by side 12 guage Central Arms 6016 shot gun. I'm not having much luck online tracking down some information on it, any ideas?

This is probably another of the Cresent firearms made shotguns branded as Ceneral Arms and sold to any number of hardware stores at the turn of the century. Most are worth under $200 if in excellent shape (seldom seen) or about $100 in typcial condition. Some are hammerless and others have exposed hammers but this does not seem to effect their value to any great extent, although hammer guns are now very popular with Cowboy Action Shooters. Keep in mind that many of these old shotguns like the Cresent have damascus barrels rather than steel and the damascus guns should not be fired. Have a gun smith look it over before you even consider firing it and remember that chances are it is chambered for the old shorter 12 gauge shells rather than the 2-3/4" current shells.

One of many names under which Crescent Fire Arms Co. Sold their shotguns. Central was made for Shapleigh Hardware Co. of St. Louis, Mo. from 1904 throug 1930. The Sidelocks were built by Crescent and later boxlocks by Stevens Arms. The boxlock is the same as a Stevens model 5100. Value will depend upon condition, but will be less than for a 5100 and likely no more than $100 unless like new. Most sell as wall hangers. Have it thoroughly checked a smith before shooting. The sidelocks shot black powder shells, and are not safe with modern shells (and many are not safe period).

Central Arms Co. was a trade name used by Shapleigh Hardware Co. of St. Louis on hardware guns made by both Crescent Arms and Stevens in the early 20th Century.

its stamped that it is steel and not damascus so there is one hurtle. it looks to be in good condition but shows obvious signs of use. market value is not big deal here, it has much more value to me as it has been in the family for a while. upon colser inspection it is also marked st louis and is the hammer less version. Were they all take down models? this one breaks down into 3 pieces.

If it is hammerless it was made by Stevens and is the same (more or less, there were often differences in wood quality etc.) as the model 5100. Check the Blue Book or similar for information on that model.
