off to Mexico
Every spring I hike the desert backcountry of southern Utah and Arizona, hiking and living out of my camper. This year I want to include northern Mexico. Needless to say, I won't be able to take my handgun and carbine. While travelling the Arizona border areas, I've noticed that there are places in border towns that advertise temporary firearm storage for people entering Mexico. Anyone have experience with this, or heard of any problems?

Keep in mind that Mexico is a scruffy third world country and the border area is incredibly dangerous now. There are numerous smuggling organizations, both alien and drug, operating all over the Northern Mexico, and Southern Arizona area. A lone American wandering around will have a good chance at being mistaken for an agent for US law enforcement. We might find you bones someday. [:D] As far as leaving your guns with unknown persons/organizations, it seems like a good way to lose them.

Hey , I would be VERY LEARY of this ??? anyhow , we used to travel into mexico on a regular basis when we lived in AZ. Keep in mind you are an outsider with NO RIGHTS !!!! at all , do nothing hinky and really watch your-self and belongings very closely .......Good Luck !

you know, I've been reading and posting on these forums for a couple of years now, and, if you don't mind my saying, you folks are a pretty gloomy bunch. I've been travelling much of my 55 years,often with my family, in the north, south, arctic and, yes, the third world.I arm myself when I can,and I'm well aware of the problems in the border areas of Arizona,because I have first hand experience. there are a lot of interesting places in this world where you can't carry a gun,and some of them are worth seeing.If I took the advice offered here I wouldn't leave my driveway.
I was looking for info on a service that is offered and advertised in the border areas.the immigration people on our side post these businesses for travelers.
apparently no one here has used these services. thanks for the advice, such as it is.0 -
teton county i live in rural ohio and i don't leave the house unarmed, there have been three or four murders around here in the last year or so. i think some of us just like to be on the safe side if lady luck doesn't happen to be on your side on day, that's all.
not to long ago there was an alaskan grizzly researcher that spent half the year every year with "his bears" unarmed, usally alone, and helpless. he refused to believe bears would ever hurt anyone thay knew them like he did. recently they found him and his girlfriend under a pile of brush with a wellfed bear standing guard over them. it never hurts to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.0 -
I just returned from a walk with my wife. our property borders the National Forest, and I'm still wearing my gun as I write this.I don't need any education in the ways of the world, the habits of wild animals ( I spend the winter on skis as a tracker for a wildlife study),or the imperfectability of man. I just want to know if anyone has checked their guns at the border. I'll say it again, you folks are gloomy. 0 -
tetoncountry, i go with you!!! who needs a lecture on widlife in ohio? they got there own problems!!!your question was : place to deposit your weapon on the border and how reliable are they? my answer is ; if the firm that you choose to do business with is bonded and insured, no problem ,if they are reccommended by a reliable source{city-state-govt-travel ag-or some one who has delt with them before, no problem. i lived in el paso for 15 years as a non-military personel and learned to get along quite well!! respect is the name of the game!!! ive also done alot of hunting in mexico!!! have correct paperwork available---no handguns or rifles---and be prepared to pay mordeta[ bribery] at the 28 kilometer marker. use you head an never think you have american rights. i hope im not being a downer, mexico is a terrific place! i will retire there soon!!!!enjoy--be smart!!! 0 -

Take them to a local pawnshop and pick them up if you come back.I as an American would not travel out of the country at this time.There is just as much to see here.If you want a taste of Mexico,go to California.

It is probably not legal to carry hand guns from state to state, so I would be leery of checking those. I have no experience with checking rifles either, but I personally would look into seeing if a couple of gunshops in Tucson would be willing to hold them for you. Perhaps Mercury from this board could make a quick phone call or two for you to check that out. Perhaps he would hold them for you. He is a trustworthy guy!

Perhaps "The Gloomy" are actually concerned about the safety of you and your family! You may wish to check with some border town banks,
if Sundance did not hit them. Many banks, when you open an account will provide you with a safety deposit box. Will have to loose the ammo first. Just a suggestion. Call or mail in advance. Yup, I always
strap on a .45 before approaching my computer. Never can tell when the bugger will start shooting. 1010 -
I agree with Teton, you guys are paranoid and gloomy. Sure you can stay at home and invaders can crash in and kill you (immediately arnmed or not, they can catch you off gaurd or you could miss).
I just returned from the Philippines! Had a wonderful time, and travel extensively in the country-side!
You have to use caution and be aware of your surroundings at all times and in all locations. If you are aware, and the awareness (and your fitness) is apparent to observers, you'll be fine in most cases. If there is a determined and competent adversary who wants a piece of you, he'll get a piece of you. You may win the war, but he'll get a piece of you (physically or emotionally).
Throw off the 'cowboy' attitude and enjoy life!
