AR-15 noise

i have a bushmaster A2 20" and it has recently started making a scraping noise that sounds like the action spring rubbing against the inside of the buffer tube, is this a normal sound and i have just not noticed it before? if it is not normal how shouuld i fix it, i havent put many rounds through it yet so wear is not an issue.

    I just checked out my Bushmaster and when compressed, the buffer spring did make what I would consider to be a normal sound as it was compressed but felt very smooth. Prob. nothing to worry about. Give us more details if you're still concerned.

    Clean the buffer assy & re-lube with light oil.
    The AR15 will always have a slight "twang" noise as the bolt recoils into the buffer assy, which is a normal operation noise.

    If it's what I think you are hearing, they all do that except for the last shot in the magazine when the bolt locks open. Have been shooting AR's and M16 since 1970 and woould probably think something is wrong if I didn't hear or feel it, almost feel it as much as hear it.

    I agree with Imaclone, putting a little lube on the buffer spring ought to quiet it down.

    if it really bothers you, I think its olympic makes a piston that replaces the buffer and spring. kinda pricy tho.

    Ok. After seeing these posts, I know what you're talking about. I had a Colt HBAR and then I got a Bushmaster like yours and they both make that sound when firing. I know what you're talking about now. It may just be the spring vibrating from the shock and the one comment was right about it not doing it when it locks back. I wouldn't worry about it.

    A police armorer told me that you should never oil the buffer or the spring. Does anyone know why that would be?

    If you have a defect in the spring or buffer tube, it would become apparent quickly. Gun would likely not cycle fully. I own three Colt's and they all make a springy sound. Take it appart and clean it, make sure nothing is in the tube that doesn't belong.

    My shooter has had different sounds as it has aged and been fired...always works fine though...

    it is extremely clean, my neighbor (a Marine of 20 years) chewed me out for not cleaning it right after i got home, but then he helped me clean it and said it would pass a recruit training inspection. so, i think it is clean enough. AJ CHRIST, you described it perfectly when you said, almost feel it as much as i hear it. additionally, i only noticed this noise after i got my WASR-10, so maybe switching back to the AR-15 from the AK made me notice little things like that. i dont think ill worry about it.
